Safe winter hacking... I wear hi vis, who else?!

looking good :)

Love your horses boots, they look great for riding on the road.
They are normal tendon boots, with the hi viz straps bought from Lidl a few wks ago. They have red flashing lights for rainy weather.

I also put a bit of reflective tape on the end of my schooling whip (like a tiny flag!) cant tell you how good it is for encouraging drivers to keep thir distance ;)

Ive done that to my whip too!!! it really does create a bubble around you which motorists stay out of (in general)

I really cant see the reasons not to wear hi vis. We were wearing hi vis when we were hit by a car. The Police told us if we hadnt of been, the driver could of claimed he didnt see us, and I would never of been able to live with the guilt then.

This is me with Donovan, just setting off to long rein down the road. He is hi vised up as much as me, because if we loose each other, he can still be seen.

and this is what (both) my horses wear, as if i were to get thrown off and they legged it home, I know drivers will see them too.

ive got both mine in parsons rumps, which are cooler than sheets as my horses sweat like mad.

I've never seen those! They would be great on my sweaty thing too. Where do you get them from?

I've had a lot of polite hi viz, and love the effect it has on traffic (especially as both mine are big ISH types) but have found that the reflective bits are starting to flake off a bit one year on.

This in itself is a very good reason for always wearing hi-viz when you leave the yard.

I also like a mix of yellow/pink/orange. I used to have yellow only, but we in an area with lots of oil seed rape fields, so I got a pink tabbard as the yellow didn't stand out enough.

same here, the blue started to flake off. and, i got stopped by a copper who ORDERED me to remove my tabard as he said i was impersonating a police officer!!!:eek::eek:

Another one that never goes out on the road without being fully hi-vised up - both me and the horse

me - hatband, tabard

Horse - exercise sheet (unless it's too hot) and boots

We don't hack on the roads too often to be honest as we have lots of lovely private land to ride on, but a friend was recently told we should wear high vis hacking there too as if anything happens it makes you much easier to find.

Hello,

new member here , and Yank to boot. So, forgive my questions if they sound utterly ignorant.

Tabard? never heard that word.

Is 'hi viz" something new in UK? like the campaings of some years back to get folks to wear helmets? (still controversial to some degree here)

I love the photo of you on your "police" horse. You just need a badge!

Oh, and why do your helmets not have a built in visor? and why do the helmet cover's visors stand at that jaunty but strange upward angle?

I totally am in awe of how you all ride your horses down the road , with trucks and cars and farm machinery and dogs and . . . ? That takes courage!

I don't have to ride on roads much at all, so am spoiled in that regard. Road riding scares me a lot.

Hello and welcome Zeehorse. A tabbard is a little sleeveless jacket. Hiviz is not such a new thing - it was around when I was young 20+years ago, but as traffic as got worse people wear it more nowadays, in my opinion. I think a lot of people hack on the roads because there is not as much open space as in the US...

Our regular hacking gear. I have to walk 2 mins down the road to get to my school and he will have the hi viz brushing boots on and I normally wear my tabard too.
