Safemix Bedding

ohh, I would be really interested in peoples replies to this!
I am looking at getting safemix too (the price is v good!) for my wet and grubby COPD mare. I tried some easibed (woodchips) and thought it was rubbish as didn't soak up wee at all and just got all mushed around, so don't know if this is similar or more absorbant?

IT'S GREAT!

Very absorbent and heavy so doesn't move around too much, yet doesn't break your back mucking out.

It is cheaper, but just so you know, the bales are smaller....

Used it all last winter with my new mare who was too wet for megazorb and was costing me a fortune. Annoyingly my local stockist is stocking it this winter!! GRR!!!

what is the texture like? Is it chips like easibed or is it more like little shavings? How many bags do you use to set up a bed, and how much do you use each week? Do you do a full muck out, or deep litter with it?

ThePony I tried woodchips last year (Countrywide own brand) and HATED them, they were cheap but so wet and back breaking to muck out.

Interested to know what the texture of safemix is like, I'm just concerned it's woodchip and shavings rather than 'wood fibres' and shavings which sound utterly different!

exactly my experience and concerns!

It is like a mixture of woodchips and shavings to look at.

I have used Easibed and wasn't overly impressed with the absorbency of it and found it back breaking to much out. I don't like shavings as again not very absorbent and move too easily. Safemix is a lot more absorbent than either of the above.

So although it looks like woodchip and shavings, it isn't, it is different. It is a lot more absorbent.

I didn't have a traditional full bed as I have rubber mats. But I do have a bed on them, nearly a foot deep as my girl is so wet. I'd have said I used 4 bags to establish that in a 10x10 stable?

I have just started using cushion bed and shavings mixed together ( so like safe mix) and love it! It seems really absorbent and is proving very easy to muck out. I pay £3.99 for cushion bed and £7.20 for shavings so it is working out far cheaper for me:)

I just thought I would update incase anyone is interested in trying it.

Got 4 bales last week to try out (I didn't want to order a pallet load only to find out its rubbish!). My (wet, grey, COPD, box walking, bed eating) mare had 2 bales in which were mixed in with the 1 new bale of bedmax already there.

Well, I am absolutly blown away by how good it is!! I wanted something that would deal with her grottyness in the stable, that I could also give her a good bed of, and that wouldn't bankrupt me. This is it! It is waaaaay more absorbent than anything else I have tried, doesn't shift much (the wet certainly doesn't) and lasts really well! The first day I did a full muck out, but since then I have just poo picked as the damp takes up a very small space and doesn't shift, and the top is still totally dry. I intend to semi deep litter - just picking the wet out once or twice a week. It sticks to her rug a little, but certainly no more than shavings, same for getting caught in her tail. Really is good stuff. I have lost count of how many different beddings I have tried for her, but am def sticking with this.

(P.S. realise it sounds like I work for them or something, but I don't! Just thrilled to find a product that acutally works and doesn't break the bank!!)

I tried it last year, found it fine to use but the smaller bags it came in made ordinary shavings more economical .

Yeah, it doesn't fluff up or go as far as a bag of shavings, but I am finding it much more absorbant so it does last longer and I need to top it up less - which is good as the shavings were bankrupting me!

I use this and have found it really good to use. My horse moves around a lot in the night and is quite wet so I wasn't able to deep litter on shavings as he stirred it all up, the bed always looked dirty and I was using 2 bales a week on top of rubber matting.

I have used both the Safebed and Snowflake Softchip bedding (which is similar) and both are heavier when laid so don't move around as much, don't stick to rugs/tails/droppings. I remove droppings and then take a pooh scoops worth or two of wet out each day. Bed looks nice and clean and horse seems happy.

I've gone from 15 minutes and just over a wheelbarrow full of shavings to 7 or 8 minutes and 1/2 a wheelbarrow on Safebed or Softchip. Only reason why I've gone with Safebed is cos it's about £1 cheaper a bag than Softchip.

Took 4 bags to do 12x12 stable with 18" banks and about 4" of base.

This is the bedding we have at my livery yard.my horse is quite messy and i either deep litter for a week then dig out or i muck out properly each day and put bed back down. Either way it makes a good bed that doesnt really move,is absorbent and i use a max of a bale a week as thats what we get inc in our livery price and the bed is always good. Can look a little dirty but will still absorb and not smell overly :) id rate it highly!
