Having treated myself to one of the 'POLITE' hi viz tabards at HOYS last weekend, I rode out in it for the first time this morning.

I am fortunate to enjoying rural hacking but there are still a few motorists that insist on speeding past horses and a fair few 'white van man' types that go round the corners on 2 wheels.

My usual attire is a plain yellow tabard and a yellow cover on my hat at this time of year. A yellow sheet is used in winter.

The difference my new tabard made was simply astonishing, nothing past me at more than 15mph. I felt really safe and visable. The roads are a dangerous place for horses now, but this tabard made all the difference.

No doubt this thread will be pulled for advertising. I have no interest in the company that has developed the product -sadly ! what a successful product they have. Well done to whoever designed it and I am sure accidents can be prevented by using the tabard.
 
I bought one of these a year ago and had great responses to it from drivers, my last horse was a big dark bay that some people seemed to think was a police horse, get similar reactions now with the new big girlie.
There are still the odd driver that thinks they know best and no stereotype it really is all sorts, only problem is the tabard is getting so common now it doesn't seem to have the same effect in some areas, but still good none the less.
 
Me and my hacking buddy both wear the Polite tabards and my buddy has a blue check hat band and breast plate thing as well. We rode through a busy village today and a guy said "I hope there are no riots down there!" pointing to the woods we'd come from. People frequently think we are police and ask us if we are training. The difference between them and an ordinary tabard is amazing. When I was leading my new horse out to traffic proof him, I wore a bright orange tabard with L plates on - most people understood that too,
 
Agree that the impact on motorists is much better. I think its the blue hatching that catches their eye first. Have had a number of cyclists say, "I thought you were the Police" - even though my horse is a 15.1 grey PRE with a Spanish plait!
 
i bought one of the tabards, and the blue and white reflective hat band, and the blue, white and dayglo leg bands, LOL

I've had so many ramblers ask me am I a police women :D

Cars pass me at a crawl compared to before where my pony would nearly be sat on their bonnet :eek:
