I posted asking for new hat recommendations a few days ago, and that got me thinking about all the different safety standards and styles.
i have a top of the range HSI skull for xc which meets the most rigorous tests including the snell one.
However, I did want a lightweight, modern one for everyday hacking and schooling (eg Uvex or similar) but I still think it needs to be really safe. Can these types of hats ever be as safe as a good skull cap? I’ve been looking at Charles Owen ones which seem to be about the safest, but open to suggestions.
Obv I will get it properly fitted but if I have a few brands to aim for at least I can try to find a shop which stocks them. Or use It as an excellent excuse to go to Badminton!

Your skull hat is always going to be the absolute safest.

I have an HS1 and a lightweight ventilated Uvex Mips, which are very different beasts. I soon get uncomfortably sweaty in the HS1 in hot weather, and it wouldn't be fun on an all day ride. That's what I've bought the Uvex for.

There's a ventilated HS1 now, isn't there?

MIPs is well worth looking out for. The tack shop only had the Uvex in stock with MIPs so I couldn't try another brand.

I think I could be copying you! I wear my HS1 for xc and hunting and I don’t know I’m wearing it, but on a long hack with no adrenaline I have a sweaty headache!
I’ve had a lightweight cheapo Champion for hacking for about 10 years, so def needs replacing.
I can always put the skullcap on for anything young or silly I feel I feel I might fall off. Fortunately, nothing like that at home at the moment!

I have ridden for 21 years and have always worn a HS1. One summer I asked an experienced Polish RI for suggestions on a lighter hat and he told me that he would far rather I had the best protection possible. He could not in all honesty sugget I rode in something of a lower standard.
Thus I took my HS1 hat to USA (in my cabin baggage back pack with my camera tucked inside) and wore it in mid day summer heat in Texas, California, and other USA holidays. It was always fine. I never got a head ache nor affected by the heat.
