Safest tie ring for a nervous horse

I haven't tried tying Angel up yet. I'm concerned she may pull back if something scares her, and our yard is not enclosed. I use a long lead rope so am looking for a way to tie her so that it will release if she pulls back, but still stay attached further down the length.

What's the best way to do this? Is there a gadget to attach to the tie ring I can use or maybe a special way of tying?

I looked at the Idolo, but can't see a video on how it works. I remember seeing it at Burghley (I think) a few years ago. Is the company still going? I've seen them on ebay but can't see much recent about them.

Or go into a climbing shop and buy a figure of eight descender and karabiner, alloy, not plastic, stronger, longer lasting and easier to lock off!

I use an idolo. You can thread the lead rope through 2 ways. One holds tighter than the other, depending on how much force your horse pulls back with. I use a long lead rope and use the tightest method. He has pulled through right to the end, so won’t stop him totally but certainly slows him down without panicking.

Brilliant, thank you!

My old horse would occasionally pull back when tied to my trailer. I would tie him with a lead rope to baling twine as normal then put a lung line on him and just thread it through the baling twine. It gave me plenty of time to grab him when he pulled back. It solved the issue with him.

The Idolo looks like just a jazzed up figure of eight descender. I’ve set up 2-1 pulley systems with baling twine. I would have used a DMM Bug if anyone had been tricky because I can easily let the rope run or lock it off.

Thank. I can see the video that shows how to tie up, but the 'how it works' video won't play. I can't see how it releases
The theory is, horses are most likely to only pull so far back, and by using a long lead rope (12ft) they will stop pulling back before you run out of lead rope so remain tied. In the event the horse is in a real panic, they’ll just pull it to the end and it’ll slide off safely.

Just as a side note, this FB page has some awesome posts about teaching young horses to tie.
What FB page? Am I missing something or did you not post the link 😂

Wanted to check it out, as need to teach my mare to stand tied up on the yard at some point. Haven’t actually got any tie rings on the yard yet though, so training is on hold til we have some..!

1694434689213.pngAfter Lari was startled and had his pull back accident I bought a load of these, and put the lead rope through two of them. They released and came undone without breaking so I was able to use them again. It only happened a couple of times.
