....Do you always wear a hat when you ride, body protector, viz gear.....do you lunge wearing a hat and gloves......do you always move round horses carefully,do you turn your horse to face you when you turn out in the field....do you make sure you don't leave any thing lying around that would cause an accident on the yard to you or to your horse......Erm, just wonderd if you where a 'Safety Freak'......as for me I'm always careful.....but, I'm not saying I'm perfect......I often think I'm getting more obsessed as I get older!

I often think of the things that I did when I was younger......often made my Mother's hair curl

So what is your safety record like?

I always where a hat and gloves when I ride and lunge.
Always where Hi Viz when I hack.
Where a body protector when I jump at competions,
I always make sure everything is picked up around they yard and headcollars are hung back up so horses cant get feet caught in them.
Always move round strange horses carefully.
Always turn horse back towards the gate when turning out before I let them go x.

I would say that i'm a lot more safety concious now I am older especially now have I have a kid. When I was younger I didn't care as much as there was only me to think about and if anything happened I just thought great time off school. Now i'm older I think god if anything happened to me what would I do - I couldn't work who would look after my little boy etc etc !!! There are far too many things to worry about being a grown up.

I am getting more of a safety freak as I get older..... my fields all now have a double gate system in place (in case of escapees) all rugs are hung up as are headcollars. I even have rubber mats in the passages so no one slips...... am truly obsessed!

At college we have health and safety shoved down out throats which has led to me really not enjoying my horses! We have t trn out in a hat, gloves and stable boots (we have to wear this when riding and lunging aswell), no riding/being on the yard in a sleeveless top, we always have to jump in a body protector......Crap like that.

I'd much rather be able to muck out when it's hot in a bikini top, ride in flip flops, wear a sleeveless top on the yard/riding, lead my horses without a hat and gloves jump without a body protector! So no, I'm not really a safety freak

I do try and keep excess crap that could cause injury off the yard and turn my horses back towards the gate when turning out though.

I'm terrible with safety.
I wear a hat when I ride (when its really hot sometimes i take hat off) and gloves when schooling. I can't ride in a BP so I don't. Viz gear when out on usy roads only. If I lunge I wear no protective clothing at all except joddys of course.
Never move around my horse carefully...trust him TOO much! and he turns around in the field for me anyway.
I do make sure the yard is clear of hazzards though!

Oops im a bad person lol!!

i always ride in a hat
always lunge in gloves
and jumping i try to wear my body protector
and turn out....well lol hose rules get forgotten lol
but at college we follow the safety rules of hat and gloves for everything!

Always wear a hat when I ride, but only because my mother would flip if I didn't, and doubt the people I ride for would appreciate it.
Don't wear a body protector that much, unless I plan on jumping, but even still don't wear it all the time.
Always wera hi-viz if I'm onthe road! Find it silly not to!
I lunge in gloves, only because I know how much it hurts if the rope goes through hands!

Sometimes turn horse back to gate when turning out, sometimes don't. If it happens it happens, if not that I don't worry about it too much to be honest.
Always put tools and things back after I've used them, so as to prevent people and horses getting hurt.
I don't consider myself to be a safety freak, but I am safety aware.

Normal common sense. if you were injured, they could be sued.
I don't wear hat and gloves for turning mine out or bringing in, ut an in an enclosed ares where if they played up or got loose, they could not go far. But the rest is normal practice.

Hmm. I think you can go a bit over the top with the whole health and safety thing. To teh point of ridicule. I work for a company that actually has a safety directive about how to carry hot drinks. I kid you not.

Around horses I wear gloves but that's more to do with my nails! Wear a hat for riding but not really for lungeing. No high viz but I don't hack on roads. I am a bit slack really in that dept but I do have a good awareness of my horses when I am around them.

I would not, however, ever turn out in a headcollar or ride in trainers. (the latter mostly because it's a bit pikey)

I have to turn my cob out in a head collar during day as he has a fly fringe - don't think he would appreciate me SEWING it to him lol! Personally I don't think that turning out with a head collar is 'pikey' if its something you have to do! There are usually reasons for it

Which is fair enough when I'm around college horses but when I'm doing my own I'd rather not have somebody telling my how I should be leading them!

Always where a hat, hi-viz and gloves for hacking, BP for jumping. But after having a bad fall last week out hacking ( he did a massive spook) I will wear my BP out hacking as well.... once I'm pain free! You don't bounce as well when you get older, and your bones break more easily.!!

I am a safety freak, I just get so worried about me or George getting hurt, so:
I always ride with a BP and hat
Always ride in gloves
Always lunge in gloves, and I wear a hat if I think George might be lively (not often!)
I have dog tags on George's saddle and bridle in case I fall off on a hack and he runs off and someone finds him!
Always wear hi-viz hacking, even if not going on the road - helps walkers, cyclists see you sooner.
Always hang everything up / put things away.
Always turn George away from me when I turn out.

Oh dear sounds like I am truely obsessed!

I nearly always wear a hat when I ride, never wear a body protector - don't own one. Sometimes wear a hat to lunge, depends on the horse, wear gloves to lunge but never to ride. I only lead one horse at a time, always use a slip halter (although mine are very well behaved), always pick up anything left on the floor and will not leave a horse on the yard unless somebody is holding it or it is tied up. If they are tied they are never out of my sight.

Careful? Yes, very - but I have never had a handling injury.

Lunge and ride in gloves - I wouldn't have hands with some the horses I lunge! I don't like not riding in gloves but won't break horses in gloves though.

Always ride in hat - Only get one head - I have not worked so hard to lose it over some thing so stupid.

Tie hair back when riding.

Reflectives - Wee bit slack I have to admit but if I'm going for a road ride or with a baby then will.

Body protector - Cross country only

Turnout - Depends what I'm turning out ( I do my own) if its fresh, young horse thats been in, it can be quite dangerous trying to walk it through the gate and turn it around, IME it's safer just to unclip it, line it up to the gate just at the gate let go and let to gallop, kick, buck and go mad while safely the other side of the gate!!

Tidy freak - so nothing left around the yard not in it's place.

i'm pretty safety concious... i do everything u said, but i hate my body protector, only wear it for proper jumping lessons or xc. we do mess around on our horses, but u gotta have a bit of fun, and we'd never endanger the horses. we used to jump backwards (us facing backwards on the horse) ride bareback and bridless in a field full of horses (but we always wore a hat - so safety concious

) and ride in pyjamas!!!
