Peacock iorns are really only suitable for anyone 8.5 stone or less (not suggesting you're too heavy!) so really for kids and very small adults

I never knew that why do they not make that clear when selling them!

I had been told about this, but wonder why, if they're made for small people they come in 5 inch size?

Well i did wonder this christmas-kate as mine were adult sized ones.A childs foot would of gone right through my irons because of the size

I wanted a pair and managed to find some pretty huge looking ones which definately weren't for a child lol. Will still be buying some (because i can't afford the mountain horse ones) but will keep an eye on them.

I looked at mine whilst i cleaned them last night for today and there were no cracks,or nothing visable.Im never using them again, been completly put off by them.Wasnt a pleasent experience!!!

I have several horses and none of them have "standard" stirrup irons - I use either peacock irons or "kwikout" irons (think that's the right spelling!) - they are hinged at the top and "break" open if you're unlucky enough to fall and get your foot stuck. They look like normal irons and I've been using them for about 15 years.

Rubber band irons are designed for kids only - they cannot support the weight of adults

I had this explained to me when I was doing my R&RS years ago

I used to ride in bendy leg irons and never had my foot caught up. The only time I had my foot caught was in a normal pair of irons and THANKFULLY the stirrup bars were in the down position.
It was years ago at a riding school where some of the unknowing students would push the bars upwards thinking it was "safer".

I saw these safety irons on Ebay:

I had to chuckle to myself though as the seller states that this particular style of iron had been "been years in the making" when infact us side saddle folk have been using this style of over a century!
It looks like they have been adapted slightly for astride use, smaller eye for the leather and you get two irons instead of one but the basic principle is the same as the old side saddle safety irons.

Im 14.5st and have used my peacocks for 18 months and have had no trouble at all.

Had a bad accident at a riding school where i flipped of 17.2hh backwards, getting foot stuck in fillis iron, which shattered the bones in the top of my foot.

Its peacocks for me or I start to panic x
