I want to buy some safety stirrups for my young horse and I don't know which ones to go for as I'd like to buy a pair i can keep using when he's a bit calmer (!) I like the sprenger ones and they say that they are safety stirrups but are they? My next fav is the mountain horse ones but I don't want to hsave to buy the boots to fit them. Next is the traditional safety ones with the elastic...any experience/advice?

I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurve the Sprenger ones

. I haven't (yet!) used them from a safety iron point of view, but the difference to my ankles/knees is brill

.

As to their safety aspect, I'll be getting some for daughter to try and help keep her joints good, and I'm paranoid about her safety - I make her ride in her Exo body protector at all times

I use Barnes Buckles on normal flexi stirrups, because you can then use which ever stirrups you want, but still have the quick release.

I have some of the copies of the Sprenger and really rate them, they are more comfortable and I really believe would release the foot if you were unlucky enough to fall off and get the foot caught in the stirrup. (I have got my feet caught in more traditional shaped 'safety' stirrups after a spook at a jump ... not a good moment.)

I haven't tried the actually Sprenger stirrups as I thought they were too expensive - but might now consider paying the price as I don't think I would want to ride in any other type of stirrup!

I also luuuuuuuuuve my Sprengers

- only have one pair at the moment on my dressage saddle that I do most of my schooling on but am thinking of getting another couple of pairs for all my saddles as the difference is huge - especially on a 2 or 3 hour hack! Just can't be fagged to keep changing them

I am so surprised no one has said 'bent leg' irons, I have these on both my saddles and they are the ones recommended by British Racing School and Pony Club. I cannot abide the ones with the elastic and they are dangerous for adults to use as they are not strong enough and can snap.
