how important is safety around horses to you? Do you always wear a hat when you ride? A body protector for jumping and reflective gear when on the roads?
Yes, yes and yes because we're forced to while on campus.
Off campus I ride with a hat I don't jump in a body protector (because I hate them!!!!!) and I never really wore reflectives before coming here.
I always wear a hat when I ride - had a fall a few years ago where i landed on the back of my neck - just pulled muscles but have never ridden without a hat since. Always wear gloves too. Only wear a body protector when im cross county jumping. I wear reflective gear when the weather/light needs me to or when im going on the roads however i have lots of off road hacking so very rarely go on the roads.
I always wear a hat! I normally wear reflectives (have a great one that says does my bum look big on this!) I love it! Gets people smiling on the road instead of being stuffy!
But I NEVER wear a body protector, I have always found them too restricting.
I nearly always wear a hat, certainly hacking..but have been known to jump on the pony and school on a surface without one - stupid really cos I fractured my skull a few years ago (I don't recommend galloping into a tree) when I wasn't wearing a hat..back in those days though I don't imagine the squishy velvet hat I was wearing would have made much difference.
Never wear a body protector, don't own one.
Will always wear something hi-vis when out..in fact I get really wound up when people don't
I always ride with a hat, I never jump in a body protector unless im on my youngster, and as for hi-viz i have to admit i never used to until i got my youngster, better safe than sorry now so im always seen with leg bands, tabard, b'plate, and ex. sheet
Always wear a hat when riding or lungeing. Have had to wear body protector when schooling my mare who was having a few issues but dont now. Would also wear a body protector if lungeing a lively or unknown horse as Ive had experience of both back feet in the stomach/chest!
I always wear reflective gear when riding or leading on the road.
I used to work in tack shop, and you should replace you hat if it has experienced any trauma or after 3 years (I know that's unpopular but the material they are made out of degrades, I promise!)
I wear a hat ALWAYS. i ALWAYS wear refelectives on the road and a pair or spurs or a whip on the road.. is a necessity.
HATE body protectors, they unbalance the rider.

Always wear a hat and always wear reflectives (not just on the road, if I fall off in a field I want to be found again!). Only wear a body protector for xc's.
I always wear a hat. I had a young horse take off bucking whilst I was getting on and plough into a wall a few years back - I was very concussed even with an approved hat on and I shudder to think what might have happened otherwise.
I school x-c in a body protector but must confess I don't break in one. Mine is not that comfortable and I figure it hampers as much as helps.
Mostly I am safety mad. (There is a cartoon character here to teach kids safetly called Elmer the Safety Elephant and it's a running joke people call me that!) I ride so many young/unpredictable/downright dangerous horses that I figure I take enough chances just doing my job. I'm maniacal about safe environments, careful handling, proper equipment, good skills, following procedures, thoughful decision making etc. and I figure that goes as far to keeping me in one piece as any equipment.
i always wear a hat, don't jump much but if i do, i never wear a protector i don't have one, and i hardly ever go out when i need reflectors but i wear them if i do
I was naughty and got on MB's boy on Saturday without a hat although I've never got on Ty without one.
I don't ride with reflectives although I do have one. I'm very bad I know but it's hard to get out of the habits you had as a 12 year old.....people didn't really wear them then!
I'm a bit of a safety nut, I always wear a hat and always wear a body protector (am I the only one that does?), I had a nasty fall a few years ago and broke 3 ribs in my back and cracked my pelvis - a body protector would have saved me a lot of pain and box rest! I always hack out with a fluroscent tabbard at least.
I always wear a hat, don't wear a body protector as I don't jump yet, but when I start I def will wear one. I wear hi-viz EVERY time I go out and to be honest it really pees me off when people don't wear it. You are SO much for visible when you have hi-viz on, it makes a huge difference and I think that it should be a law of some sort that it is worn. It saves lives, without a doubt, both human and horse
I always wear a hat - After breaking my back 18 mths ago I would not dare ride without one (In the past I had ridden occasionally with no hat). I always wear a body prot when riding too now.
I must admit I do struggle a bit when I see people riding without hats, esp those in magazines that should know better. And beaglers for dressage? I know they look elegant but I would not have thought they would be a whole lot of good if you came off. Same with top hats.
When lunging / handling I don't wear a hat ------- Maybe I should......
I always wear a hat to ride, but not just to handle them. I dont wear a body protector unless Im competing XC. If I hack (dont really anymore!) then I will wear a reflective tabard even if its bright sunshine.
I have ridden once without a hat when I totally forgot about it! I had a wooly hat on so got a tad confused! Felt VERY vulnerable once I realised!
I always wear hi-viz on the roads, it annoys me when people don't, roads are dangerous enough as it is- how could you not try your best to make you and your horse as safe as possible? Alot of people seem happy to jump on a horse who is quite obviously not mentally prepared for it, and they put a hat on and think they are safe, does'nt make sense.
