This is a bit of an epic I'm afraid!

We were having a grand old time hacking out together and he was just brilliant. However, he was dripping with sweat and because he also has to wear a SI rug all the time I decided I would clip him out. Never giving this a second's thought, he was belly clipped when we got him, I clipped him and he stood fine. Tootled off to PC with him and daughter proceeded to ride off the lead rein with me hovering close by. She did her trot round the arena, the instructor was singing her praises, it was all lovely under control, managing to rise etc, and just as she was going to bring him back to walk, he literally exploded  he bucked her off, flipped himself over backwards :eek: and ran round the arena causing another child's pony to spook and they also fell off :o:eek: no one could believe what we had just seen, kids were all fine and chucked back on straight away happily thank god. I kept him on the lead rein after this but he bucked her off again. In the course of the next week he had her off four times, and these weren't little falls they were explosive bucks :(. To say I was gutted was an understatement, couldn't believe things had gone so badly wrong just because I'd clipped him! I sought professional help and we worked with a dummy and various other things to desensitise him. But as soon as daughter got back on he would do it again, although not as bad. Eventually we had deduced it was her legs gripping his belly causing him to buck, but of course the more he had her off, the more tense she was so the more she would grip and the more he would do it. Finally I came up with the ideal of putting a lunge line round his middle and randomly tugging it (not hard) to simulate her legs, this was the key! We worked like this until he stopped bucking/reacting to the line.

The moral of the story is Shetlands like having at least an inch of padding between them and the world and all hell breaks loose if you remove it!

Touch wood we seem to be ok now, she hasn't ridden much during this time until recently therefore her confidence naturally nose dived/riding went back quite a bit. She isn't riding him off the lead rein, I have been long reining her on him and this works quite well as the behaviour couldn't progress if he started it. I know it is not ideal but I feel it is the safest way to progress meanwhile.

Also decided he is too lean and fit which wasn't helping so much to his delight he is on more grass than he was!

That video is just too cute! Loved the poo picking at the end. What a fabby little horsewoman she'll grow up to be. They're both a credit to you and well done her for keeping going when she was put on the floor! And well done for solving the problem, who knew that thick fluffy coat served such a purpose..! ;)

Sad to hear about this issue and hope your daughter will bounce right back but .... He does look very smart clipped out :) what a cutie!

Him in that SI rug is just cuteeee! She's still smiling so hopefully no long lasting effects from his change in behaviour

Lol its a 3ft3 rug which is the smallest I could get and its still a bit big!

Lol I sped all that up as you probably gathered as everything is done at a snails pace :D

He does doesn't he. The question is, dare I ever do it again, and if so do I do it now before he gets too hairy again and its a big shock to clip it off or do I leave it and let the wee hairy sod sweat. I did find various sore bits once he was clipped that I'd have never known about beforehand. Its a bit of a dilemma!

We are entering the most thelwell like pony class in a few weeks so no hair cuts before that (and he has about a hundred kgs to gain :p:D)

Oh bless him. He'll get used to it - maybe never been clipped out before so guess it freaked him. Still gorgeous and daughter's a dote.

Whoops. :) all's well that ends well :D

I think we are getting there anyway, not quote back to where we were but a lovely summer ahead of us riding so should be fine.

Thanks :) No he definitely hasn't been clipped out before, but then neither had the other two (much hotter) youngsters I have and neither of them tried to kill me over it :o:D

It is difficult with a pony that small because its not like you can get another rider on him to sort him out although I must admit I have "ridden" him a few times when he was being very bad - I can stand with my feet flat on the ground and walk over him :D. Bizarrely there were loads of older kids desperate to have a shot on him having witnessed him throwing a fit that night (I declined!).

in about 1 weeks time when the fresh prickly stage has gone he should be fine, make sure his numnah does cause his hair to be static and get caught in it like it was a stocking, that would be why he is bucking, and of course your daughters breeches could cause a bit of static, poor boy. being pricked!!

That pony is the cutest (and smallest) thing EVER.....minus the bucking episodes...

Tell your daughter not to worry- ponies and their ways teach you to be best rider ever!

watching the video i think it is going to take more than a few falls to make that lovely crazy kid to become nervous, she is just too sweet.

Such a cute pair so sorry to read about problems, but what a brave little girl to carry on. Ponies do have their moments!
How good to do the poo picking. I just love all the pink as well.

Oh my word how cute! I don't want children because I'm crap at responsibility, but I think they're both adorable and I'd almost consider it if mine had a cat in hell's chance of turning out as sweet as this!

I clipped him 6 weeks ago, its taken 6 weeks of intensive training and working out what was wrong to get him back to almost where we were. I washed him straight away to rule that out, it was definitely more than being prickled believe me!

Basically I don't think he'd really noticed her til that point! Initially he was highly sensitised all over, latterly it was just his belly.

Yes the bucking ruined things slightly but we had our first ride and lead since "the troubles" tonight and he is back to his old self thank god!

She never stopped wanting to ride him but she didn't want to trot. T be honest if it had been me there is no way I'd have got back on and I didn't actually want to put her back on either in case she got hurt BUT of course I couldn't leave it as a bad experience either. Its been quite a stressful time! I could have gone and got another pony but I felt he would come right if we got to the bottom of things and I knew if I got another one he would be outgrown before she would be back on him and he would never be the child's pony he could be. So that's why we persevered and it seems like we've made it through the other end!

Yes she loves poo picking the only problem is that's speeded up about twenty times faster than it actually is. Hopefully she will get quicker shortly lol!

Cutest video ever :D

:) thanks.

He is obviously out of control, there is only one answer...

send him to me :D

There was a point where he was nearly coming to you - in a can of pedigree chum!!

Oh no OP, you've made me worried! I've just clipped my shetland out (hunter clip) and I regularly put my 1yr old on her!! I do hold onto him though, will just hold on even harder ;)

Lol I think you will be fine since you are holding onto her. Just don't coincide a full clip with going off the lead rein is my advice :D. That makes me feel better because I did feel afterwards I'd done something incredibly stupid!

Well, OP, you answered your own question in another thread. He's male!:p

Here is your rival. My helper's 4yo daughter on Tetley (3yo filly).

BTW, I think that's screams of excitement as it is her first time trotting!

(Not Tetley's, let me hasten to add, as she regularly leads the herd in a wild canter down the field, bucking and rearing all the way! But she, too, is a saint with rider on board).

That poo picker was taller then your daughter, you can get smaller ones, or am I missing the point, do you let her poo pick and nip off and do other things!!! Our is this a cp issue!
(this is jokey by the way)
Lovey video, super pony, happy kid)

:D i just love the bits where your daughter is looking after him, and the poo picking is lovely....you are doing a good job making sure she knows all the extra work that goes into having a pony....

maybe if you clip him next time you could maybe velcro an extra bit of numnah where her legs go for the first few weeks so he gradually gets used to less hair and you could take it off once you feel he has desensitised.....

glad you have solved it for now and daughter looks very happy

Aw that's a shame she got bucked off but she still looks delighted to be riding him :) Naughty shetty ;)

That SI rug makes him look adorable! and the video made me grin, your daughter is a cutie, I'm so impressed that she can saddle him up, mount and dismount and poo pick all by herself! :D

FW I just happened upon this ad for a 3ft fly rug on preloved and thought of you! Couple of holes but I'm sure it would still do the job :)

Thanks Kat, I have one of those rugs already but he needs a SI rug hence I just spent over a hundred quid on the brown monstrosity! Thanks for thinking of us tho.

She has used a smaller one but lost interest in the job after three minutes so I am not investing in a small one until I know she is committed to it! The fact I am behind the camera is probably proof I don't get a chance to do anything else :p

I actually tried putting a rug under his saddle but it made no difference. I hope we have done a proper job desensitising him now and it shouldn't be a problem again...

She rode him almost solo in the field today, I had a lunge line on the bit but I didn't do much with it, and despite it being about 14c (fog) he was very calm and quiet and behaved perfectly so fingers crossed he is over it for good.

To be fair he is actually not naughty at all. It was a queer over reaction for sure but I really don't think he had an "agenda", he was genuinely scared/horrified by the whole situation. A lot of folk have said oh well typical Shetland what do you expect and I have to challenge that view, if you put the effort in they are great wee ponies, he was brilliantly handled when we got him, and it meant backing him was easy (recent part aside!!) and handling him is a breeze for her.

The best bit about him has to be he is exactly the right size for her which means she can do all these jobs relatively easily. I do have an agenda which is the sooner she can tack up herself the sooner I don't have two or three ponies to get ready for every ride :p:D (my neighbour rides one but is allergic so I have to do hers too!)

Sooo cute and fab that your daughter is undeterred. How old is she (just plotting first pony access for mine - it's hard on the arms holding her on my friend's 14.1hh, even with the giant Parelli saddle that I got stuck in!).

Love love love the mane styling.
