I had the vet up two weeks ago to a cut on my mares leg which turned out to be sallenders. Since then it hasn't really gone anywhere, we've washed it regularly and put on bepanthem cream but so far its not cleared up. I wasn't expecting it to be gone by now but every couple of days the scabs come off and it starts bleeding again. Its become quite sore for her and she often doesn't want me to touch it, resulting in me dodging flying hooves.
Is this bleeding 'normal' and would being treated for mites help?

They do bleed sometimes. When our big cob was younger he had dreadful mallenders and sallenders, we tried umpteen creams and treated for mites but nothing made any difference. Eventually we decided that we were making things worse and left well alone. He now only gets the occasional flaky bit, he seems to have 'grown out' of it.
I wouldn't keep washing the area though as that will dry the skin out and make it more likely to split. Sorry I can't suggest anything that works.

I dread to think how much I have spent on treating my cob. Selsun shampoo worked and now I apply twice daily Johnsons baby lotion (in the pink bottle) £1.79 a bottle and it keeps the skin soft and supple.

I put some of my eczema cream called aveeno on a dry bit behind my cobs knee and also sprayed it with alamycin (sheep antibiotic footrot spray) and it went away.

Bepanthen is not really what I would use. I had a horrific skin problem when pregnant and I tried every sort of cream imaginable including that one and it's rubbish. I also *wouldn't* use aqueous cream or Sudocreme.

I would try something specifically for eczema like aveeno or unguentum merk (that's thicker and might stick better).

Everything will sting a bit when it's that sore unfortunately.

My mare gets something similar round her hind heels, cracks open up and can be very hard to get on top of them.
Last summer the vet prescribed Flaminaze cream and an antimicrobial shampoo. That was the only thing that got on top of it and it healed up nicely.
I now keep a close eye on it and if it looks like it might get bad again I use Net Tex Udder Salve which is the best thing I've tried so far (and I've tried Sudocreme, vaseline, Aloe Propolis creme, aqueous creams)

I have found the camrosa really helps. Keeps the skin soft and supple so stops the dry brittle breaking and bleeding.

Thanks for advice I will try it !!

I have a mare with scarring evidence of having had skin problems for years, mallenders and sallenders, as well as problems round her fetlocks, on all 4 legs. After a massive flare up when I gave her Brewer's yeast, I have stopped giving her any form of wheat and no molasses. She hasn't had hard feed in the 4+ yrs that I have had her but now her rewards are carrot/apple and she doesn't get any feed except grassnuts/chaff.
Her legs are clearing up beautifully, with a bit of help from silver ointment.
