My 12hh welsh companion pony eats salt licks like they are sweeties! He uses his teeth and bites off chunck, he can go through one in bout 7-10 days.

Should I ..
a) Stop letting him near them in case he OD's on salt
b) Provide lots of salt as he obviously needs it?

My 2 older (11 years and 17 years) horses never touch theirs and my 5 year old licks his now and again - One salt block lasts about 8 months.

All are out during day and in at night.

Thanks

Surely a molasses based one would be worse as it would be 'nice to eat'? He comes in to get off grass as he gets v fat and I worry about laminitis - although he's never had it. I think he would stuff a molasses one down in 2 days. If he ever escapes near the sheep and gets near their molasses mineral lick he hardly comes up for air!

Horses don't need molasses at all plays havoc with their teeth as well as far too much sugar.
I would take the salt lick away for a while as consuming that much salt isn't good for them, may keep licking/biting it as a habit?
