we used to put salt into the ponies' feeds at the yard during the summer months when they were doing the camps etc -just to replace what they had lost through sweating
I've always been told it's hard to overdose a horse on salt, seeing as they are so large it would take a lot to give a horse too much. However I only give mine a small amount in each feed, and only in the warmer weather. TBH I can't see that a horse would be able to self-regulate its salt intake, how is an animal to know how much salt it should have? We as humans only really know as we are constantly told, I suppose we naturally know up to a point how much is too much, but still...
my pony gets a tablespoon of salt everytime he does hard work ad sweats up alot, on average about once a week, the rest of the time he just hacks and doesnt sweat up much, so doesnt need it.
its fine to add salt to feed as long as you dont give too much.
Yes I'd put the salt in the feed too. It is difficult to OD a horse on salt - put up a salt block so that the horse can also have as much or as little as he chooses to. All of mine have free-choice salt and they all love it.
I had always heard that it was hard to overdose aswell. Mine has a salt lick at all times but i noticed she didnt touch it all inter but licks it all the time now its summer, so there must be some truth in what Jay2 said. I think that it would be a good idea to put it in his feed though if he wont lick salt licks.
If there is too much salt in the feed a horse will simply refuse to eat it.
I use a mix of 3 parts table salt to one part Lo Salt and feed it daily on the advise of the vet.
Personally I dont like salt licks (or those Likkit type products that stay in the stable permanently) as Ive seen a number of horses demolish a whole one in a very short space of time and become ill.
