Hi All, I’m new here. Introducing Cleo, a rescue pup. I rehomed her at 8 weeks and she is now 13 weeks old.
She’s 58% Saluki, 35% Greyhound, 6% Whippet and 1% Danish Farm Dog.
She loves people and is a real softie when settling down after a couple of hours of high energy play.
I’ve had greyhound crosses before but never a puppy or Saluki. We live in a city suburb and plan to let her off the lead in dedicated dog parks as recall will be a long slog.
But this is first week of walks outside as fully vaccinated so that’s something.

Any top tips for me?
I’m wanting to work on separation anxiety and keep her busy mind occupied.

What a lovely pup! I have had a few saluki greyhound whippet crosses. They were enormously affectionate but tended to please themselves before people. I hope yours is either a foody or can be slightly obessive about toys as it makes training much easier if you have something they find overwhelmingly motivating. I would say they need a job to channel their energy. There is a large choice nowadays with agility, scentwork, hoopers and more. Some salukis can be quite reactive so early thorough socialisation at well organised puppy classes (no noisy chaotic free for all) would be a good start. To be honest I am a bit jealous! I had a fabulous time with my saluki lurchers but my lovely retired greyhound is better suited to my lifestyle nowadays.

Im not a fan of salukis, but once you dilute them down with other things you can get a lovely dog. All mine go off lead from the day they come home. Its very, very easy to teach a young puppy good recall. It usually goes a bit awol when they hit the teenage phase but thats when they go on a long line and harness. Its a balance between them not feeling like being off lead is a special and exciting event and keeping them safe. I always have an older rock steady dog as well, so its easier for me.

Ive got whippets. I wouldnt have either in a dog park type situation. I wouldnt want the older boy hassled, and the younger boy plays too hard and fast for none sight hounds to put up with. Mine think grabbing each other by the neck and having a throw down at 30mph is great fun, funnily enough, other dogs dont like it. So mine play with each other and arent allowed to play with other dogs we dont know. Easier now they are adults. I was very, very, very selective who they interacted with as puppies and young adults.

You are likely to have quite a drivey dog with a strong desire to chase. Find an outlet. If you are in the US fast CAT is perfect for sight hounds and I think fairly accessible. It can feel like it would be something that increases the prey drive, but actually the opposite is true. They have an outlet in a safe place under a controlled situation. And Im yet to meet a sighthound that doesnt absolutely love it. Sadly we dont have fast CAT in the UK, but we do have lure coursing which is sort of similar, and it is one of a few things I do to keep my little lunatic sane.

And prepare yourself mentally for adolescence. Not every sight hound is an awful teenager, but the majority will be challenging. It doesnt last forever and they do come out the other side.

With SA, start super slow. Dont ever let them get over threshold, and just gently build up time alone. I normally have mine with me 24/7 until they get to 4 or 5 months, although I do make sure we spend that time working on them staying downstairs alone, or inside alone, just for a minute to start with. That way, when I leave them alone and go out for the first time its not such a huge shock and they are already comfortable and happy alone for short periods.

I have litter sister greyhounds from Irish Coursing bloodlines. Oh my the prey drive is intense even after 5 1/2 years off the track. I couldn't let mine off in a dog park now as I couldn't trust them not to rag every small fluffy brown thing that got near them. They play hard and fast with each other everyday in the garden and with other greyhounds when they come over.
When mine lock on to something all training is out the window and they go totally deaf. Because they will act as a pack even though it's just 2 of them they never go off lead in open spaces. But their whole lives have been spent on lead - they do not know any different. They stop and sniff everything they want to and they are happy and content.
So I'd find times when the dog park is very quiet or empty before letting them off lead
Yours looks super cute and huge paws!

I think greyhounds are the exception. They just dont seem to care about being on lead so long as they have a garden to run about in. I cant imagine the chaos of sight hounds in a dog park full of all sorts of dogs 😂

Oh she's lovely, we had a Saluki x Greyhound and possible a bit of something else. She just looked like a small greyhound. On the whole her recall was pretty good but you had to be alert to what was around. Once she started after a rabbit or deer they'd be no getting her back but she'd eventually make her way back to the car. My dad spent a lot of time waiting in the car park for her!

Hi All,
Thanks for the kind words. What a journey is her been. I recently discovered that her mum was emaciated tied to a railing pregnant with 11 pups. Giving birth a few days after being rescued. Believe mum is going to a good home now.
Cleo had a very challenging phase not helped by our unpreparedness. But we are out of the woods as she reaches 5 months.
Recall is good. I always have chicken, ham or cheese up my sleeve which helps. We started at an enclosed field for a couple of weeks and have graduated to a huge open park where lots of other lovely dogs roam. The GPS tracker gives me some peace of mind in case she goes walkabout.
But, this is a false sense of calm as mentioned by someone here that she is on the cusp of adolescence.

What a lovely surprise. I have been in comms with another of her sister’s so to speak. Cleo is settling down and finding her feet. What about your pup? How has she been getting on?
She's a little madam! This is Biscuit. We kept the name. She has a big brother saluki greyhound too and completely bosses him around. I'm in contact with Toast and their foster mum but noone else although I told BCDH I give permission to pass my details to anyone that wants contact. I found you by accident asking chatgpt if Biscuit's tail is likely to get feathered and it showed me Cleo's photo! I am currently waiting for my wisdom panel results but I guess it won't be a surprise now 🤣

Ha ha! I spent hours on Chat GPT feeding it photos and Cleo data to get predictions for her future appearance. Although a bit spooky, it’s a nice outcome from AI right? Cleo was called Twiglet I believe. We are based in Norfolk where are you?

Somehow I knew Cleo was twiglet 🤣 I knew someone was in Norfolk but didn't know which.
