Hi has anyone seen or used this type of bit ? Its been recommended to me for my strong ID, the only picture i've seen looks like it only has one ring at the bottom of the shank, does it have rings for two reins, thanks
I've not ridden in one, but a friend showed me hers.
Yes, you do use 2 reins and a curb.
You can't tell from the normal pics I have seen (as they look at the bit) and not from the side. But, where the flat mouth piece joins the arms of the bit, it is round and your top rein sits there. It also gives you an independent action on each side, as where you attach the top rein it pivots.
Mainly use it in the show ring, do not jump in one as too strong. My horse is strong and used to lean on one side to lock that rein, as it works independently off each rein it stops him doing this and he works beautifully in it, taking 4 1sts in 2 county shows straight after I started to use it
At home I try as much as possible not to use it and concentrate on the correct schooling in a snaffle and hack out in a myler combination. It is not suitable for novice hands though ... not that I'm saying you are ... just a bit of advice in case anyone else rides your horse and may use it.
It is especially good for cob types with big fleshy tongues and wide jaws, they look quite heavy but the cob types seem to love them.
