It has been a long time since I updated anyone on how my white GSD is doing (turns 8 on 1st April).
We've done some agility with him which he LOVES (need to get back to it).

I took the plunge and joined a GSD group close to me where members walk their dogs together. The first walk I went on, I was terrified as he was very dog reactive. We went to the beach and everyone had tennis balls and flingers and after encouragement I took his lead off. My boy had a whale of a time and ran after all the tennis balls and ran into the water.

We've since been on several walks and I take him to the park regularly for off lead plays. It's been a tough journey but I have such a happy dog. I got a GSD cross pup for my birthday a couple years ago so introducing Tia the terror. Sam has a new lease of life since she's always wanting to play and if he doesn't she nips his legs until he does or tells her off because he really doesn't want to play. We've had them in boarding kennels a few times and although Sam was wary (Tia loves everyone) at first, he came out of his shell and groups of dogs go out together to play. When we get there Sam is happy to run to the pen and let us leave with no whining or watching us.

lovely post. my grandaughter has a young gsd who looked very much like your first picture when she was little x

What a great update and well done for persevering with him. At the risk of adding a negative input, please be very careful with tennis balls and GSDs, they really are not big enough for them and are a great choke hazard. Far better to use a slightly bigger ball, ideally on a rope.

Advice I was given here helped us a lot.
Thanks MM - I will investigate other types of balls that can use for playtime. :) I don't mind negative when it is constructive and is for my pups wellbeing.
