Does anyone keep to the same routine all year ie bring in over night? I usually turn out 24/7 in summer. I actually find it easier to have them partly stabled as I poo pick twice a day when they are out all the time. We havnt got a lot of grass either. Who keeps the same routine even though they have the option for 24/7 turn out? I can't ring in during day when weather is hot as the stables get boiling hot.

Yes, pretty much but he is out for a little longer in summer when there is more light.

We can leave out overnight in summer but there isn't enough grass in our paddocks so I generally stick to the same routine. We don't have any spare paddocks to rotate through so if I left him out overnight in summer my paddock would be a little bare through autumn and winter.

Thank you for your reply. This is what I'm thinking. I also want to put them out together again and I think I would worry less if they were just out during the day!!

Mine have the same routine ayr. Turnout at 8/9am and bring in at 3/4pm winter and 5/6pm summer. If they have farrier (i leave them in as he comes and helps himself to them)/competing then they will have the night out to compensate being off grass in the day.

Yes I used to stable at night for years then during Covid my shavings supply was short and I wasn’t competing so turned out 24/7 from April to October time. That kind of broke the mould and now I do that every year.

Eta that horse was a real fatty and I generally did it for weight control. He went better for me in a morning before he’d had any grass in his belly.

Out in the day and in at night during winter (9-4ish usually) on my new yard and 24/7 for the most part of summer. If it’s crazy hot this year I’m lucky enough to have cold brick stables in a barn so he will come in if needed. Last year I was a bit stuck, had virtually zero shade in the field but the stables were wooden and in direct sunlight. I like to have a break from mucking out for a few weeks in summer and it’s his time to chill and be a horse. Obviously I do daily checks and keep an eye on his weight. Last summer I was conscious of him losing weight as there was no grass, this year because we’ve moved yards it’ll be the opposite!

I wish I could put mine out 24/7 - in theory I could as yard allows it, but no one else in my field wants to. I try to turn out by 6, and bring in as late as possible. I try to exercise him in the evenings and it helps that the barn he is in is on the same routine.

Mine come in by themselves for night, regardless of season. They usually prefer to stay out much later during the warmer lighter nights, but always bring themselves in when dark hits. The mare decides this mainly - before being with me she was brought in at night all year routine, so she now chooses that as thats what she has always known, i guess.
They have a yard where their shelter/stable/bed is - its near to our home buildings, so they get to be much closer to us and the other animals, say hello, interract. They’re really quite a sociable pair.
The fields are a 100m track away, and view of home/their stable from the fields is hidden by large trees. So i think they come in just to see what’s happening at ‘home base’.

Yesterday was funny - they came running in, because a deer was barking at them from the fields! I was outside and had heard the deer, but this deer was persistently barking, making me even go down to check-out if there was an issue, only to find the horses hurridly heading home, looking back at the deer with a worried look! They’re used to the deer, and know they bark, but this deer really was having a go at them, unusually!

Out overnight and in during the day all year round for mine- all good doers who benefit from being off the grass for a good few hours in the summer and benefit from stuffing themselves with hay and drying off in the winter. They’re in when you want to ride/ vet or farrier come. It’s all win as far as I’m concerned. Monty gets a bit feral if left out 24/7! I find the daily handling and routine helps keep everyone in check.

Ours are out 24/7 all year round. Swings and roundabouts really - it's better for his arthritic hock but means I have to be very careful not to let him eat too much grass.

Out 24/7 year round for my girl. She’s very happy in or out but has a badly arthritic hock which she suffers with if she’s stood in. Living out with friends suits her really well.

She’s never had laminitis but I’m very careful and manage her weight with a greenguard muzzle. I have to say, if she ended up coming down with laminitis despite muzzling and the light exercise I can give her- I’d call time. A life where she can’t be out in a big field with her friends is a life I don’t want for her.

more or less.

unless temps skyrocket mine go out 7am and come in 1.30 (winter) and 5pm (summer) as i don't have the grazing to support 24/7 turnout. i do have sand pens so they go out every single day for at least half a day even if the fields are a bog.

when its very hot they go out at 10-11pm and come in at 7am and have fans in the stables.

The routine for our 2 only changes a small amount depending on the time of year. They get turned out & brought in about the same time of day. They get fed at the same times & given hay at the same times in their stables. In the winter hays is put out in their paddocks because for a couple of months coming our of the winter there is little grass so we feed hay in their paddock. During the winter they are only hacked out weekends because it gets too dark in the week day evenings.

They are getting older now so we keep an eye on them & as yet they are still enjoying work, love to hack out & love to have their toys out in the arena & do some jumping, they get really excited to jump. One is 25 years going on 14 & the other is 19 going on 13. When we decide that they should be retired they will not go off to a farm to live out their days. They will remain at the livery yard they are at now which is their home and will keep their routine. They have had this routine since we had them at 5 years old, they are content with their routine & I see no reason to move them to a retirement livery in a farmers field which I feel is discarding them once they are retired. It would be cheaper looking after them but they are family & need to stay with us & with a group of horses that they know.

I went a little off topic then but that's how I feel.

Mine are in at night and out during the day in the winter months (generally late September/early October to early April/early May depending on the weather and grass) and then during the summer months they are in during the day and out at night. Works well for me and them.

Yes. Only difference is theyre in a sand paddock over winter not the field as we have limited grazing but theyre turned out and brought in at same time 365 days of the year. Also fed hay in paddock and field and those times dont change either.

Only changes if unbearably hot like last year; they then go out overnight.

No we swap so out at night in Summer when grass has less sugar and its cooler and in during the day when the flies are bad and the sun beats down.

I will be interested to see how Lari gets on out 24/7 from Saturday at retirement, but personally I'm expecting him to thrive and I expect he won't need a rug on next winter, he shakes his head when I rug him now in exasperation and has done for a while so I expect he will enjoy being without one and living out 24/7.

I would prefer it really, as I can monitor grass intake better if they stay in at night all year, but the horse flies make their life’s miserable for a couple of months in the summer, so I swap them to overnight turnout.
This is us - I have one who gets really upset with flies, even with a full fly rug and mask plus spray. She just wants it and it helps to regulate grass/weight in summer.

Our young / retired horses are our 24 x 7 all year. They have ample grass and hay / feed as needed with shelter. Ridden ones are on a yard where they are out during the day and in at night in Winter (come in between 3 and 4) and swap to out at night for summer. If I had them at home they would probably be out 24 x 7 unless coming in to work / get out of the sun with a long winter holiday.

Yes same routine out at night in during the day - would never change back as it means their in when you want to work, vet, farrier, etc & as youngsters get so much more hands on time whilst getting so much more turnout - win win for us.

Same for me. So much easier for me with kids and if I’m late for any reason i don’t need to worry they are in with little/no food.

liveries can go out night in day summer. I keep mine on same routine all year due to laminitis.
