Went to a sanctuary where my friend works today.

What was most infuriating by far was reading through the waiting list.
Loads of "I'm pregnants" "Our garden is too small" (that took you six months to figure out?) "too much work" "moving house to flat/no garden".
One "dog has allergies" another "has hip dysplasia and too much work" (at nine months? You can tell already?) and one gem "dog is arthritic and asthmatic and keeps jumping over fence and escaping"

Was disturbed to find that a few were from other sancturaries including two big names, and were not readmitted.
One pair, a Spinone and a Newfie, have been back twice

Oh and an Irish Water Spaniel x Staff

This place does not take Akitas, as every one that has come in has bitten staff and they are too hard to rehome.

Another disturbing thing was either puppies being given up for biting children, and worse, 9-10-11 year old dogs being given up for biting - if you have a dog that age, who has bitten someone, what chance does it have of being rehomed???

Anyhoo, pics!

I walked this girlie. People were hoping she might work but I found she lacks focus and does not like being told what to do

Lovely lassie all the same, about 6 so maybe a bit late to start now.

Old staffie's long term companion recently died and he has been palled up with this little 14mo working whippet, who is a delightful bitch.

I LOVE this boy, even though he is obviously half giraffe
tongue.gif

Apparently the greyhound men just call round when the dogs are done with racing - one even gives them numbers, instead of names
OO127.jpg

OO128.jpg

Like the whippey, he is a bit of a houdini!

Stacks of staffs, most frequent breed by far
OO121.jpg

These two are off to the DT in England as soon as the weather picks up - the bitch is wonderful.
OO122.jpg

One of two bullies, lovely girlie.
OO129.jpg

And then a visit to a foster case, he was found roaming and was so matted and neglected (nails grown right round) they were not sure of his age, sex, breed.
He only has one eye.
Helping his new mum out a bit, he has a few issues, doesn't like being left and food possessive, which is understandable.
However he is super-smart and he was learning to leave food when I asked in just minutes.
A happy ending!

Thanks for looking x

I know a friend who gave up her terrier becuase she didnt have enough time to look after him but 4 weeks late, she bought a Lab!
frown.gif
I doubt she'll keep it for much longer either when the novelty of a puppys wore off.

What lovely dogs, everytime I look at rescue sites it makes me so angry as to why people give their dogs up.

I love the look on the GSD's face.

Awww, it makes me feel so sad when i see dogs (any animal) in a home like that. I know the homes do terrific jobs but i wish people would stop buying animals and dumping them when they are either bored with them or it gets too much! Makes me angry.

The dogs in the photos are all so beautiful!

poor dogs, I could prob home that bully, grey, whip x and 1 eye shih-tzu here immediately
frown.gif

I wish people would not be such t****rs, it's bloody heart breaking

Cheers guys - Gladioli, I am a master at the 'squeaky noise that makes dogs' heads spin'

GH, all the greys, whips, lurchers have coats except for him and his brother, they are ginormous and they are waiting for bigger ones to arrive!

Yes, the bullies are lovely although neither are great with other dogs.
They all get plenty of walks from the volunteers, even in this weather.
Looking at my fella crashed out in his special jumper, he does have issues but he is a lucky, lucky dog and I hope these guys get the homes they deserve.

Sounds a lovely place CC

Pity about the bullies not being good with others....hmmm, if you could just pop the whippet in the post to me then please?

It is scary to hear about how thoughtless people can act and I do think it is very bad that dogs that isn't wanted any more after only 4 weeks, 6 months and so on, isn't returned to/taken back by their breeders. It is sad that some breeders isn't better at/doesn't care more about selling to suitable buyers.
On other hand since two dogs had been returned to rescues twice, the rescues are obviously not either always capable of finding suitable owners.

Why does an old dog suddenly begins to bite? There is a risk they do it out of e.g. pain, because it is asked to do things it can't any more etc. If it now really is rehomed because it has bitten but as CaveCanem said, with such a reputation and being old...

About the Greyhounds being dumped at the rescue as soon as they can't race no more, why is he allowed to continue and race new dogs? (Rhetorical question.)

Just realised I should have snapped the grey in the next pen to humungahound, she was wearing a hand-knitted number!
It is a great place, although very sobering.

She is a little darling, although working bred, you'd lose her to the nearest small furry!

Finny, can't highlight so can't quote your question - but dog racing is an industry here. A lot of these dogs are done at 4yo.
It's an old school thing, these guys are mostly pensioners, it is either hand them here, tie them to a fence - anything but humanely PTS.

Yes, the old dogs thing really annoys me too. As has been said in some of the horsey posts, there are worse things that can happen to an animal than humanely PTS, especially at that age.

Not a fan of staffies but that old ladys face makes me want her
frown.gif
And I just have to have that stunning grey, how beautiful is he!! Do they rehome to england ever? Or just ship to rescues here? Somebody stop me..............

He is better than a lot of greyhound people FL, at least he takes them to a rescue place
crazy.gif
Others cut the dogs ears off so they cannot be identified by tattoos and dump them on the street

In fact my pesky white spotty hound was an Irish rescue case, she didnt grow big enough to race so they just dumped her to starve
frown.gif

OOTP I dont know which sancturies they get them from, but Greyhound Rescue West of England get a LOT from Ireland now - looking at their website it seems that most are Irish rescues

I really want another and I'm torn because I struggled with 5, but then I see those poor faces behind bars and just feel like I could manage one more.
crazy.gif
I might just contact GRWE and see what they say...

Money is the only thing stopping me getting number 3 at the moment OOTP, I need to get some emergency money behind me from the lorry sale then I will be straight out there and sorting it all out
crazy.gif
I know exactly what you mean, I went to GRWE's kennels near Luton to collect Flick last year and it was horrible, I wanted to take all of the poor little things home
crazy.gif

I would be truly useless at rescue, I am so wet

I know, that is why I said rhetorical question. But I still think it should be possible to have better rules than today/have rules being followed better, so that with dogs being ID marked in either ears or micro chipped, owners shouldn't be allowed to accidentally forget the whereabouts of more than x number of dogs/have more than x number of dogs end up in rescues, without loosing their right to race dogs.

There is a man involved in Swedish Greyhound racing living in my area, his daughter both race and breeds racing Greyhounds, and he likes to talk about the advantages with Swedish dog racing being more amateur than professional. He races his dogs as long as they can and when they retires - they continues to live with him.

bless them all, i hope they all find lovely caring permanent homes. wish people would stop breeding just for the profit, seeing the photo of the 2 dogs together brought a tear to my eye dunno why really they are in a good place but it just makes me sad

OK - I give in I'll take them all - especially the bully he is just sooooo sweet. Do you think he'd get on with a little lady Cocker?

This dog is a dream!

You are braver than me CC, I daren't visit any kennels in case my dog population trebled
tongue.gif
That Shep bitch has a lovely head, fingers crossed she finds a suitable home. The excuses people have for getting rid are pathetic aren't they, I jsut don't understand how people can discard dogs like that

Hi, So sad to see doggies without a loving family taking care of them!
I'm sure if the sanctuary were to contact the Italian Spinone Club of Great Britain they would be able to help rehome the Spin. Last time I heard they had a waiting list of people.
