hi, sorry posted this wrongly will move to vet forum...
a friend's horse comes down with colic a lot lately which is rather scary; we find him lying down int eh field now almost every day and he has had a few bouts of acute colic over night in the past few months. As it only happens outside and our fields have turned rather muddy with short grass I wonder if he gets sand colic and I have read about too much sand in the guts being a possible cause, how is this detected and treated?

I have heard that you can tell if they have excess sand by getting their droppings assessed. True or not I am not sure.

I would have a word with the vet. I lost my last horse due to sand colic and it was horrible. I was only 15 so didnt really know much about sand colic. Our yard was very close to the beech, soil was very sandy and water troughs had to be cleaned every day due to the sand.

Another horse was thought to be having a phantom pregnancy. It was only when she went to horsey hospital they discovered a huge build up of sand, from what I can remember they removed over a bucket full.
