hi,
a friend's horse comes down with colic a lot lately which is rather scary; we find him lying down int eh field now almost every day and he has had a few bouts of acute colic over night in the past few months. As it only happens outside and our fields have turned rather muddy with short grass I wonder if he gets sand colic and I have read about too much sand in the guts being a possible cause, how is this detected and treated?

I was always told to check if there are taking in any sand, put a fresh poo in a bucket and completely disolve it, poor the water/poo mix out slowly and if there is any amount of sand in the bottom of the bucket it would be wise to put them on the supplement mentioned above. Bit of a messy job as you really have to get your hands in there to help break down the poo. Don't know how correct this method is, just what i was told to do!

Get a handful of fresh poo put it in a bucket mix with approx 1/4 bucket of water then very slowly pour out if there is more then appox 1 teaspoon of sand/grit left in the bottom then put on a physillium (sp) supplement.
When they have got sand colic they usually have squitty poos ans spasmotic symptoms

know this ones a few days old but thought it could still help

for sand colic especially episodes that you might be having here, you need vet treatment, it truly dosent sound like sand colic tho and needs investigating but a vet.

sand colic they will go down and hard similar to normal colic and would need urgent treatment

i live in Western Australia and we are one of the sandiest places on the earth.

decent treatment for a horse in crisis with colic is pain relief and mineral oil drench (parrafin) not vegi oil as vegi oil is absorbed b y the gut. also after the drench has come through the gut its advisable to give a probiotic as it strips the goodies out of the gut

pysillium is ok for maintenance measures but even then it can never truly be given to the extent its needed, the best maintenance is adlib hay 24/7

hope this helps in some way
all the best
Liesl
