Got him in from the field today, his left eye was very swollen and red, he could barely see out of it poor lad. The vet came out straightaway, was very good actually, and put some cream onto his eye and checked for damage etc, and said that he had a case of conjunctivitus. Poor boy, he'll have to stay in every day for a while now and have that horrible cream put into his eye, which he hated.

Vibes anyone?

Thanks

(((hugs))) Our shire/ID/Shire had conjunctivitus every summer and hated the cream too, involved lots of bribery twice a day. W used to be able to be turned out with a fly mask on tho, and he was a driven anyway so his blinkers projected him when he was in work (when it was very very mild, obv wouldn't work him when it was bad!)

Yeah, he was rearing on the vet, but hopefully when I do it tomorrow he'll trust me more and it won't be as hard..hopefully anyway

Hi westernrider. Sadly, I have had a lot of experience with a horse with conjunctivitis and there's 2 things I would say. First is don't think it's just a little niggly thing. My horse eventually had to have an eye removed because his previous owners didn't properly get the conjunctivitis under control. Secondly, one of the most dangerous things to do to a horse is try to put ointment into its eye. The ointments are normally (and god knows why) in tiny tubes and the bit that you have to put almost in the eye is incredibly sharp and pointy. One jerk from an anxious horse and the sharp end goes straight into the horse's eye and can cause huge and irreversible damage. The best way to apply it is to wipe the outside of the eye with plain clean water and some kitchen towel. Wash your hands well and then apply the ointment to the squishy end of your finger and put THAT in your horse's eye. Cut long nails first obviously! PM me if you need any more info but good luck with it x
