I went to the southwest equine xmas fair yesterday and had a fantastic time gathering as many free feed samples as i could (3 shopping bags jam packed full of samples!). And i have to say i was really impressed with Saracen feeds.
So...
Who here feeds Saracen feeds? How do you rate them?
My only reserve is the molasses content, does anyone else think there's quite a bit on it?
I am thinking of trying Shape up and Level-Grow. Does anyone use these?

Any info would be really apprecited

We used them with great success (the rep you met at Westpoint planned a regime for our stallion which suited him perfectly) but I found them too expensive to use for everything.
If ever he loses weight I buy them again especially their Prep 14 and Equijewel, but for everyday I buy a basic mix.
They are tasty, even fussy horses wolfed their feed down. One year after the Fair I lined up all the feed samples in piles and watched what a horse preferred. Saracen won every time which tells you something.

Thats interesting HenryHorn! Did the level of molasses not concern you at all? I was really pleased with the quality of the feeds and the rep really did seem to know what she was talking about and the Level Grow really appealed to me for my boys.
My sister liked the look of the Shape Up for her mare but i was slightly worried about the molasses and the fact mixes arent usually recommended for native types..

You need to look at overall sugar & starch levels, not how molasses-y they look. Shape Up & ReLeve are actually pretty good since they don't contain cereals, so don't let the appearance fool you.

I've moved onto show improver pencils to put weight on my horse & she has an amazing glossy coat & is slowing putting weight on.

Cant complain, although they weren't my first choice for feed companies.

see i buy livery pencils or livery mix off of them (a basic mix) and find them one of the cheepest but also good quality!!

No Toast as at the time we were putting weight on a really difficult horse who it was essential looked good , I'm from a generation where we bought oats/barley/flaked maize and soaked linseed added to bran, and worked out our own feed, so over the years I've seen many different regimes suggested and things like bran castigated when it also has good uses too!
The best thing re feed is to use your eyes, too many people just read labels and feed according to them instead of looking properly at their horses.
Saracen's suggestions worked, and the horse looked great, he is a laid back type so excitability wasn't a problem re the molasses.

We are using Blue Grass Horse Feeds which is the Irish sister company to Saracen, its basically the same feed Prep 14, Releve, Resolve etc etc but it works out cheaper. You order online and it gets delivered to your door on a pallet from Ireland. We are over the moon with results, the horses look fabulous and their feed rep Sharon is lovely and so helpful :)

I love Prep14, the best conditioning feed i've ever had, the Blue Grass versions have Equi Jewel and Stamm 30 already in the product, my stallion looks amazing on Prep and all the mare and younsgters get Life and Fitness cubes (stud nuts) we also use the basic nuts on some of the horses :)
