So i'm wanting to change my horses feed, he's a 10 year old welsh D and a poor doer during the winter months.

He is currently on baileys no4 - 900g, fibre beet - 900g, hi-fi - 700g (that's what the others eat so is easiest) split into two feeds and ad-lib very good quality haylage and out 24/7 - rugged and unclipped as not in work.

At first i wanted to feed him; Saracen bio life 2000 balancer and the show improver mix/pencils plus his fibre beet and hi-fi

Now i've looked at Equilibra 500 balancer and the fibregest and really like the sound of them.

Which one would you recommend for a poor-doer that can occasionally get fizzy and likes to play stallion? :) What are your experiences of these feeds? :D

Any feedback would be fantastic, thanks in advance. x

I haven't used the Saracens, but I wouldn't say the Fibregest really puts weight on.

It was fab for my old dressage horse as he had ulcers and it is basically all fibre. Nothing really very conditioning in there, although I didn't find it heating either so that is what you want.

I might be inclined to try the Saracens if I am honest.

Thanks, they were my first choice so might stick with them as it's condition i want to be putting on him and Saracen feeds are endorsed by Carl Hester etc :)

You could give Saracens a call if you want to be sure, they are very knowledgeable and friendly/happy to answer questions :)

ETA I don't work for them in case it sounds like that, just spoken to them in the past!

I filled in the online form and i'm waiting for them to reply, i spoke to a girl at our local tack shop and she really recommended them and said that's all she feeds her horse - who was previously on Topspec which i have tried but didn't see any real improvement :) I just wanted to be sure i wasn't missing any really good feeds :D a lady at my yard recomened coconut or something but i wasn't really keen :)

Saracen Horse Feeds all the way. Their service was great, emailed them and they sent me back soooo much information and great recommendations. I have spoken to other feed companies who just try and promote their products. I found with Saracens they were just giving really in detail advice, and they also supplied information on underweight horses. They are so helpful whenever you need them and lovely.

My tb who is sharp, spooky, tense and so hard to get/keep weight on looks the best he ever has. He is on Alfa-A Oil, Saracens Re-Leve (great as non heating) and he has now just started on the Equi-Jewel which again is fab as hasn't affected his temperament. Hes not fat (but I dont think he ever will be) but you can tell a difference, fab coat etc too.

Really can't rate them enough :)

I'm going to go against the consensus...I have my poor doer, unbelievably fussy, ulcer prone TB on GWF feeds and he thrives on it! I do feed copious amounts of micronised linseed with it, but his condition and attitude is so, so much better when on fibregest, equilibra and tiger oats it is outstanding! I took the advice of a rep from another, very reputable company at the start of winter and changed his feed to their fibre based products....he dropped 15% of his body weight, his ulcers reappeared, and he became a nightmare to handle and ride. I have since put him back on the GWF products, he is gaining weight, far calmer and showing no ulcer related behaviours

Saracen all the way! Love love love their feeds, the nutritionists are always really helpful and the feed is affordable and helps keep the horses feeling good inside and looking good on the outside. Even my extremely poor doer looks good on their food. Big thumbs up from me!

My poor doer 17:3 tb type is finally putting weight on with equilibria, ( it may contain fibragest but it also contains omega oil ) Alfa a , and copra ( bet that's the coconut stuff that was recommended ) .
Previously I have tried top spec, and baileys no1 , also horse and pony direct performance balancer which compares in price to equilibra. However I was recommended equilibra by someone with a lot of experience for weight gain.
