My mare is frequently going off her hard feed ( thanks prascend) but I need to hide some meds in it for a few days so got some saracens recovery mash as lots of people say it's like cat nip to horses. I made some up today for her, 1 part mash to 2 parts water as advised ( it says this is minimum amount of water) and it was very sloppy. She tucked into it very happily until all that was left was the water, not ideal if the meds are dissolved in that. My question is as it's supposed to be to rehydrate am I OK to use less water so she eats it all?

I've used it with less water, I've just made sure that the feed is soaked to a soft consistency with no excess water, I'm not sure if that is correct but my horse hasn't had a problem eating it like that in small amounts at endurance rides.

I haven't used that feed myself, but I do find that using warm water makes the feed absorb it better.
It is supposed to be ok after 3 minutes with warm water, it had 20 minutes while I drove to the stables lol so wasn't going to absorb more, I'm guessing it's meant to be that sloppy to rehydrate them.

Ditto this.

Mine won't touch sloppy feeds but is fine with it soaked as above :) I do the same with the Premier Perfomamce version too.

I have used it to get pergolide in to mine- I just use a small amount of water.

I give it as 'treat' by hand, not in his bucket, so that when he realises the pergolide is in there and stops eating it, it's not his main feed. It also means I can be sure he's eaten the tablet and not spat it out :/

He gets a small handful, then a small handful with the tablet, and 1 or 2 more handfuls to male sure its gone down. So in all, not enough to matter if it's a little drier than recommended.

He started the pergolide in November, and he is on his 4th tablet-hiding food :( Recovery mash lasted a couple of weeks, and he is now on Re-leve. Not sure what my next one will be!

I find grinding up meds and putting in syringe with water the easiest way if horse is off feed and you need to make sure they're getting the meds on board

i’ve found before i’ve had to leave it for a lot longer than it suggests for it to really absorb - i just put a minimal amount in for it to all go nice and fluffy, and then chuck some more in and leave it for a couple of minutes, then feed. it seems to absorb a lot better this way, although lily loves her soup despite not usually liking her feed too wet!

Deffo use warm water - I’ve been leaving Rooni out with a warm mash + chaff on top out in the field and he won’t eat it sloppy, only crumbly. I just add a little, stir and once it’s all crumbly I feed. As long as the sugar beet pellets are bloated / expanded with water I’m confident it won’t cause any issue for mine.

It's working perfectly to hide her meds with a bit less water in, she's absolutely loving it, that said she has loved high fibre nuts, calm and condition, D&H pasture mix, spillers senior balancer and plenty more in the past but liking it never lasts long 😫

Just a slightly unhinged random question, but has anyone tasted Pergolide? It must be pretty foul tasting for horses to so consistently refuse to take it, even when hidden in high value treats!

I used to push prescend into a slice of apple for my old girl! she'd spit them out if I put them in her feed.
She's never accepted it in an apple, carrots work for a bit then stop, currently using stud muffin treats on her and they are working ( for now). I haven't put it in her feed for ages as she just won't eat half the time, I needed the recovery mash for ABs. Even now I don't hide her prascend in her feed she won't eat hard feed unless it's something new and only then until the newness wears off.

I might actually try it lol but given that it doesn't need to be in her feed for her to go off food I wonder if it has a side effect that changes the taste of things, omeprazol has that effect on me.

I can answer this with some experience as I have used many 20kg bags of this whilst on the Endurance circuit. It is somewhat designed to be a very wet feed (as Endurance riders know, horses will often refuse water but will usually happily drink mash soup). Its primary purpose is for getting water and electrolytes into horses, so its not a feed as such. I'm lucky in that my horse will not only drink the water off first but will lick the bucket out too. Sometimes it needs a good stir, especially if the water is cold - you do really need to make sure all the beet pellets are thoroughly soaked.

Are you soaking the re-leve? I believe there was a large spate of horses choking on it as the instructions were unclear at one time
