Have also put this in Vet section

My neighbour has had it confirmed her horse has sarcoids (the ones which start off as bald patches but can develop later into crusty lumps - sorry, she couldn't remember the technical name the vet gave her).

Prognosis isn't great:

Chemo injections on the area around his eye
Chemo cream for the other areas (neck, stifle, girth area)

Treatment will cause his skin to swell and become raw / inflamed before scabs form and finally drop off. He may have a bad reaction to the protein in the injection. Vet said can give pain killers to counter side effects.

Treatment may work and sarcoids will stay away for upto 7 years but it could come back in a matter of months.

Horse not insured but she has been setting aside contingency funds to cover for such things. Treatment likely to cost £1,000.

Basically what she wants to know is has anyone else had a similar problem and what course of action / treatment did they do?

Horse is fit and healthy apart from these bald patches at the moment and she is in a real dilema as to what to do.

Thanks

Liverpool cream and anti carcoid powders from Forest Pharmacy. The carcoid has gone and the area has healed well and to date no further carcoids have appeared. Realistically the information I have read indicates they are likely to come back so supporting her immune system and keeping her healthy is vital. Hope this helps.

My daughters welsh is 7 yrs and has a few small sarcoids
She was prescribed Newmarket blood root ointment , which at £80 for a tub the size if some eye cream was pretty expensive!
We used it for 5 days on and 5 days off for a period of about 2 months and they completely dissapered

Stupid phone!
The skin did blister and left a bald patch of hair, they have just started to return but will wait until she's coming in at night before re applying the cream, not a cure but has certainly slowed them down, and although the skin looks sore and unsightly, it dosnt seem to bother her

It's always tricky asking for advice on sarcoids. There are so many "diy" treatments and they may well all work on some horses but not all.

You will hear lots of different opinions on this, but my own personal one is that it sounds a bit as though the vet is using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. My mare had occult sarcoids (sounds like what you are describing) on the face and around the eyes. She also had nodular ones in the folds of skin around her elbows. To be fair the vet didn't want to go straight down the chemo route, but he didn't have many other suggestions either.
My friend recommended propolis liquid, made by Bee Health. It's about £5 from Ebay. She said it worked on all the small ones on her horse but she had to have chemo on the big ones.

I used it religeously twice a day for about 6 months on all my mare's sarcoids and they have all gone, even the biggest one. The occult ones near her eyes were the most worrying, but they have all gone completely.
I would suggest this is worth a try, but only your neighbour and her vet really know what's best for this horse
Good luck!

We treat all ours with ZOVIRAX cream from the chemist (for human cold sores) our vets actually recomend it now and tell any one to try it! It's cheap to do, apply to sarcoid twice a day and they go away fairly quickly. It works best on the flat ones but I've had the nodular ones drop off with it to, they sort of shrivel and drop off in bits if its applied properly. Works a treat and very cost effective!

Chico has just been diagnosed with sacroids too, and we are taking the liverpool treatment option. It will be painful for him but in the long run it is the best course of treatment and vet said prognosis is very good. Once treated should be back to normal work.

I got recommended this too and it didn't work unfortunately for me :(
Heard too many bad storys of liverpool cream and it is rather pricing isn't it being around a few hundred?
I eventually tryed sarcex...new on the market-was £90 for a little jar but you only need a little bit and iv got most of jar left after using it for a week once a day on a big area it got rid of my horse's one on the inside of his foreleg with 3 days..its healed nicely with fur growing over scar...soon you won't be able to see there was every a sarcoid there its brill!:D

Thanks for the replies. After posting here and going to the vet section I managed to find the search options and found Paint Me Prouds thread which was also very helpful.

I will mention cold sore cream to her, it can't hurt to give it a go for a couple of weeks.

I think she is getting some Liverpool cream but the vet won't let her apply herself?

Have to say, I think that (touches wood) I have been exceptionally lucky with my horses / ponies over the years and haven't had anything really serious to contend with so am a bit of a novice when it comes to ailments :o

the vet probs wont let her apply liverpool cream herself as it seems to burn the surface area of the sarcoid and if applied to healthy skin can cause scaring...as people do seem to get heavy handed with creaming up such ailments as if they put more cream on then it will come off quicker or work wonders haaa

I must admit i dont consider Chicos sarcoids as a serious problem.

To me they are a minor inconvenience - will require a few weeks off work for Chico and some pain management but after that it should improve his quality of life.

My insurance will cover the costs so no worries there :)

my gelding had many sarcoids and tried the cream from Liverpool university which got rid of one but within 3 months 2 had come back in it's place!

being a chemist I did se researchand by that I mean in vet articles not just online and found a very good treatment which I then discussed with my vet. he then did his own research and this is what happened:

the sarcoids themselves are thought to be caused by bovine herpes virus and normally grow through winter and spread through summer so now is definatly the best time to treat. he injected the tumors withhuman bcg vaccine. he did this every couple of weeks for about 8 treatments. what were huge tumours are now either completely gone or vastly reduced. these are tumours that affected tack areas and he is now completely comfortable in his tack. each injection cost about 80 quid but spread over the time was affordable ( the insurance would not pay as he had previous sarcoid treatment) this treatment was also done on my friends horse which had a sarcoid sounding like yours just under his eye and that completely disappeared and fur grew back.

hope this helps and apologies for poor spelling and grammar but typing on phone is hard!! also sorry for waffling x

Hey, I had a small lumpy "thing" on my youngster. I was bleeding and bubbly texture, I originally thought it was a bad saddle rub wound after he came back from breaking however it would never heal. I was using aloe vera juice for my other horse and just ended up putting a good dash into this horses feed also. A few weeks/months later the thing dissappeared, still a small bald patch but delighted that my accidental treatment worked. My vet had a look at it when he was out and thought it was beginnings of a sarcoid. I got the juice from holland and barrett buy one get one for a penny so it didn't cost much. He's no longer on it and it has stayed away. Good luck.

BCG treatment works well with sarcoids in the eye area. liverpool cream works well for other areas. CAN cause a little discomfort but your vet will usually leave some bute for the first few days. both treatments will waken up the immune system to fight the sarcoid tissue. sarcoids are not the end of the world (depending on position of them and general health of the horse inQ) but can be inconvenient (and costly).Personally having gone through BCG, liverpool cream, liverpool surgery on 2 horses my views are this
I would never buy a horse with sarcoids
2 i would always take them to liverpool for initial diagnosis/treatment
3 treating them as Prof Knottenbelt prescribes usually gives you a good respite for quite a few years.
Remember he who panics first dies first.
NO i wouldnt self medicate a sarcoid.
Good luck

Im trying different route on recommendation from two friends one of which has dealt with large sarcoid issues. Both friends used hilton herbs thuja cream (previous name was ditton)you can buy it of ebay or vet meds ,I have just done order online.I have had vet out and he talked of freezing, mine have been caught at early stages.I want to try cream first and see if there is improvement in two weeks its fairly cheap less than £20 and looking online has had good results.Friends horse at our yard had huge sarcoid it was open cracked and oozing after bathing and above treatment completely gone.

sorry don't know how quote but that's really interesting to me ofcourseyoucan - sounds like you have had as much sarcoid treatment issues as myself! my geldings sarcoids were behind his elbow on his near fore and the bcg also worked very well there. this was 4 years ago and there have been no more develop and no more growth *touches wood* have your results been more varied? I also agree to never try and self medicate a sarcoid as it can cause them to spread. I guess my faith in the Liverpool cream was tainted but it has had good results with others o have heard of.

the horse treated with bcg above the eye was around 12 yrs ago. small bald patch just visable.his flat verucosed sarcoids were treated with cream. 4 bcg inj to eye, 4 cream applications to veruccosed sarcoids.. he has been fine now for 12 yrs he is now 18, and feeling great. 2nd horse had laser surgery to chest 5 yrs ago and another on his sheath lasered at same time. good result tho did take him back to Prof K in august, and banded and injected 2 lumps on original chest op site. sheath area fine, lumps now halved in size and texture. to be inj again in couple of weeks once finished competing proper for the season.

thanks for all the great replies. Think my neighbour will be relieved to hear that things might not be as bad as she thinks at the moment. Her horse is an 11 year old home bred and as she no longer has the mum he is very special to her and trying to make this decision is difficult.

I've tried virtually everything on my horse's sarcoids - only two things have worked.

1. banding sarcoid if it's got a neck and no warty clusters round base
2. Sarc-Off cream (which you can only get from vet and is £120 for a small pot - similar to Xxterra cream)

the sarc-off cream has been amazing - after 6 daily applications they have all dropped off after 2 weeks.

liverpool cream didn't work in the slightest and was the biggest waste of money in my case. £600

Camrosa!! My mare had a nasty sarcoid on her neck and we got advised to try camrosa, within about 2-3months it was completely gone and never came back. We visited her with her new family earlier this year and there is no evidence of it ever having been there :)
