As some of you may know, I have been looking for a horse for ages now, and I am going to see a horse tomorrow who sounds just what I am looking for, owned by a friend of a friend, local.......
However, I have been told that he has a small patch under an eye, which may or may not be a sarcoid.
I would be geting him vetted if I liked him, and would obviously take the vets advice on this, but Ijust wondered if any of you lovely people out there have any advice or experience on sarciods, and would it put you off buying a horse?

Any words of wisdom would be gratefully received.

Sarcoids can be a nightmare... as they say, the only predictable thing about sarcoids, is that they are unpredictable.

Don't dismiss the horse because of it, but make sure the price reflects the fact it has sarcoids. Wose case scenario is that the sarcoids spread and pop up in areas that interfere with the tack or horses action making it unriadable for months or forever!

Hi, one of our horses has a sarcoid and we bought her knowing it was there.

We spoke to the vet before buying her just to get his opinion and he advised us not to buy her because of the uncertainty of how sarcoids behave.

The vet had advised us that if we were still keen to buy her then to give her a thorough check all over her body to see if there were any other sarcoids. this would indicate that they were seeding and this would have told us to steer clear.
We couldnt find any others so we decided to take the gamble because we liked her so much.

She was almost 4 years old when we bought her, she had no signs of any other sarcoids so we bought her (at a significantly lower price , due to the sarcoid).

The sarcoid tended to look on appearance like a small splint and as we were showing her we decided to get it treated.
The size did reduce but it didnt go completely.

Four years later it still causes no problems at all and she has not developed any others.

We may have just been lucky though.

depends how close it is to the eye, as to how worried i'd be. if it's very close, treating it will be very difficult. i had a mare i bought who had sarcoids (only way i could afford a horse that good!) and she had them for years, some went nasty, some didn't, we tried every treatment under the sun! luckily they never affected her rideability though.
