Hi everyone

I bought a extremely well bred (abercippyn) 3 year old section D gelding in may to do ridden showing next year.I noticed a small lump just behind his cheek on his neck and its grown very large now and is abviously a sarcoid ( rough warty appearance ) Im devastated and want to know possible treatments for less scaring etc... the vet has said she will take a picture of it and send it to liverpool and they will send the cream for it and the vet will have to apply it over a number of weeks but she said it will scar and leave white hairs :( .All advice welcome.

cheers

Are you positive it's a sarcoid? Warty lumps and sarcoids can look scarily alike but a young horse often gets loads of warts because their immune system isn't fully mature. As the immune system matures, the crop of warts just disappears with no treatment whatsoever. Some vets say that if it looks like a sarcoid, treat it as if it IS one. Others advise differently. My veteran gelding developed an odd lump on his face 4 yrs ago, exactly under where the cheek piece sits. My vets said treat it as if sarcoid (he was 21 at the time) and applied Liverpool cream without contacting Prof K at Liverpool Uni. Sunny had 4 separate applications with 4 days between each one. Once the treatment had finished, I sewed a piece of sheepskin over the cheekpiece and continued to ride him as normal. Didn't bother him in the slightest and after a few weeks, it had disappeared and there's no visible scar or white hairs.

My friends horse had two enormous sarcoids and one flat warty looking one, got the cream from Liverpool (through vet, vet applied cream) and all dropped off no white hairs.
None grew back.
Good Luck :)

you can get them frozen off, we had one covered in sarcoids nd we were considering it. dont know what the after effects are like though - whether there are scars or white hair etc. ask your vet next time.
