Hey everyone, so about 2/3months ago my 7year old tb mare came out with this lump under her belly .. At first we was thinking it was a fly bite or that she's had a tick on there that I hadn't seen and that she had some kind of reaction.

Then it stayed there and I got my yo to look at it and she said that it looks like a sarcoid. She said to monitor it.

So 2/3months have gone and my mare was on box rest 3weeks ago so when the vet came out I asked him and he said that you basically have 2 options .. He could either take photos then and send them to Liverpool to have it treated or we can wait to see what happens.

So I decided to see if it got bigger because I had people saying leave it alone if you start doing things it will irrtate it and then others saying get it seen too.. So I've been in 2 minds what to do.

Now over the last month it has grown and she keeps on knocking it (when she lays down) so its gone very red so I have been putting sudocreme on it to keep the flies away from it.

Now I have the vet coming on Wednesday for her vaccination and thinking about it being treated. Has anyone had any removed? What's the % of the same one returning? Her getting anymore? Are there any other treatments instead of the liverpool cream?

Here are some photos the first ones are from when she first got it and the red looking ones are what I took the other day .. I should have taken some more this morning.

Also can I add that she isn't bothered about it. When I put sudocreme on she's fine.

Thanks for getting this far!

I had one treated on my filly just under a year ago, we used liverpool cream, it's totally gone, neat scar. Hope that's the last of it.

I tooka load of pics and the vet used those to send to the Proff! There is an extensive website http://www.liv.ac.uk/sarcoids/

IMO ifit's getting knocked, it is already "interfered"with so you may as well treat it.

Incidentally I was told to use Vaseline only to keep the flies away, Sudocrem is a healing cream and you don't want to encourage any more cell growth.

Oo I didn't know that. Will dig out my Vaseline pot! Thanks for the link. It's only lately when she has been covered in her bedding that she has knocked it other then that she hasn't caught it but thinking of having it removed now.

What was the process like when you had one removed? Was she given any pain relief or was she okay? How much did it all cost roughly? Not that price matters.

Re. cost. I've just had one small sarcoid treated on my cob's sheath area and its come to £250.

This was for the initial visit where the vet took a photo of the sarcoid and emailed it to Liverpool University for their perusal and consideration; then for the making up of the cream and three separate visits on Day 1 (treated with Liverpool cream); Day 3 (ditto) & Day 6.

Side effects? Some slight swelling to the sheath area but otherwise nothing to worry about (yet). Will keep monitoring.

Hope this helps.

There's a lot of wive's tales about sarcoids on here and in other places: personally I'd get the vet to have a look soonish and set your mind at rest.

It didn't seem to bother her quite honestly, she could have had pain relief but did seem fine. I have heard of horses needing sedation to apply the cream because it's so sore, I found a bucket of Hifi did the trick!

She didn't seem to be in pain or upset in any way.

It was round about £600 which my insurance paid.

The vet puts the cream on for the set number of days, itlooked sore and angry, blistered, then turned into a flat dry plaque just held on bythe root. I had to sweep my fingers around it to make sure it was free to drop off when ready, again she took no notice whatsover. It dropped off and I was left with a little dried blood scabby bit, which turnedinto a lovely little scar. I'm really pleased with it.Ohit did get ablot bigger before it came off, but thats because the cream has worked on the root of it too.

Here we go

You cansee from the last one how nice the scar would be.I can get apic of the finished product later if you are interested!

It honestly wasn't the big deal I thought it would be!

Hi there ive battled for years with arcoids and tried numerous treatments and found the only one that seemed to work was bloodroot cream, i had literally tried everything i was hoping the sarc ex that i tried would work but it didnt :( good luck :) x

Speak to vet and don't do anything until you have. If you apply treatments and they don't work they can render Liverpool inactive. My boy had 2 lots of sarcoids with 6 months of each that looked just like yours, they got Liverpooled and I used Sarcex at the same time. That was 6 years ago and no sign. Liverpool isn't that bad, a bit sore at the time but wasn't really a big deal

I used to have sheeps bands put on Bensons, then when they fell off, vet prescribed efidex cream. Its a human prescribed cream to kill of cancer cells, that also works on sarcoids. Vet did me a prescription and I got it at Tesco pharmacy, cost about £17.

God there are so many treatments thank you so much for all of your replies! Think I'll have to look into it .. So if I try bloodroot first it is likely to make the liverpool cream inactive? Yeah my YO daughter said today that Maisies one could possibly be tied but I don't want to go doing any of that. Wondering wether Liverpool cream is worth doing straight away or try something else first :-S gosh decisions!!

Never heard that using blood root would make Liverpool inactive..?? My vet told me to try it first as its often very successful and much cheaper, if it did not work he said themto give him a shout and we could look into Liverpool cream.

My mare has just started the Liverpool treatment today, her sarcoid was exactly like yours op . She had it removed and it came back more aggressive . Personally I would go straight for the Liverpool cream, it's the only proven treatment for sarcoids .

Good luck

Lasering has as good if not better results than Liverpool cream.

The most important thing is to have the sarcoid assessed by a vet who HAS a clue - or who uses Prof Knottenbolt for advice.

My own vet has a lot of experience - with some sarcoids he recommends simple treatment: we've used Effudix for VERY small, flat sarcoids on the sheath and on a stallion's scrotum successfully - but it ONLY works on certain types. If he's not sure, he sends pics to Prof. K. We've used banding (lamb castration rings) combined with freezing on ones with a neck (only one type of sarcoid is suitable for this) and we've used Liverpool Cream. All methods have been successful because they've been treated according to the type of sarcoid - faffing around in the dark is useless with sarcoids!

Ignore me, it was my misunderstanding.

oh know don't say that :-( what treatment did you use the first time?

Mine developed 4 at the end of April, 2 which are on the girth, so not able to be ridden. The vet sent photo's to Liverpool and he was treated with Liverpool cream. The 2 on the girth now need re-treating, plus a new one. Again the vets taken photo's and he will be treated with Liverpool cream again. My insurance has paid up but I would assume they will not cover for them again come renewal time.

Pinklilly: what insurance company are you with? How much has it cost to have them treated? I need to write a list of questions to ask my vet on Wednesday to get a much clearer view on them an what to do

I totally agree with sarciods are potentially disastrous I shudder when I hear of people self treating them .
And you need to bear in mind the horse always have the potential to grow new one or for them to return on the same spot.
I take mine horse who need lasering to professor Dixon he sent me a email it said what's the difference between true love and sarcoids ?
Sarcoids are for ever.
They always have the potential to come back.

My vet quoted about £500 and my insurance paid out £581, my total vets bill came to nearly £1100 but this was for other things too, not covered by insurance so I had to get the vets to work out the total cost of the sarcoid treatment alone which I think would have been £700. He's insured with Stoneways now, paid out no problems. Just paid bill now time to start again..

Agree again, too serious to mess about with.

I don't understand why anybody would dabble about with cancer :(

And we had 5 visits over 8 days to apply the creams. This was because the different sarcoids were treated on different timescales as instructed by Liverpool. There was a little swelling but he didn't appear to be in any discomfort.

Im not going to try and self remove it at all. I just wanted to get a clearer picture of what its like to have it removed and information on them because im not experienced when it comes to sarcoids ive never had to deal with them before so is all new to me.

I knew I had to get the vet out middle of sept for her vaccination so I left it since my last visit (3 weeks ago) to see what happens to it and now she has started to catch it im going to do something about it but wanted to hear experiences before wednesday.

We had a TB mare a few years ago, with a very nasty sarcoid next to her girth on her sternum. It grew to approx 2.5" long & 1" in diameter. our PC DC recommended Tea Tree oil from any health food shop as her daughter has used it successfully onone of her eventers.
It was bloody & covered in flies, but, little by little, it shrank away. Our vet would take a quick look everytime she came to the yard & measured it, so we could check its progress. After 4/5 months, it had disappeared, so I am a big fan of Tea Tree oil & would always use it first. My vets only comment was "Well they can clear up spontaneously".....

I'm not saying - oh this WILL work, just that this was our experience - hope it has helped

Its funny that you should say that, my YM used teatree oil on her horses sarcoid and they dropped off! I only have aloe vera gel which I also love! My mare once had an itchy spot on her neck and I got some aloe vera gel to try and sooth it .. after putting it on twice a day over a small period of time it bought out an abcess in her neck! turned out she had a thorn from berry bushes in her neck which had got in and I couldnt see or feel and aloe vera gel bought it out .. brilliant stuff!
