Sarcoid help please!

One of mine has sarcoids and has had successful treatment with Liverpool Cream.

The only thing I have done to 'self medicate' is ensure I am feeding a balance of vits and minerals to help the immune system in case this has an affect. I don't know enough about the medical aspects of these to play around with topical applications, and I don't want to make it worse for my horse. I have found that horse had had another which we hadn't spotted which had healed itself and has dropped off. :)

If sarcoids are malignant cells- putting anything on them which will assist them in cell growth would worry me.

Apparently Royal Dick Vets are researching a possible genetic factor which gives a predisposition to sarcoids...

haven't got time to read through the whole thread sorry, but someone on here said they used crest toothpaste the other day that worked - yours looks quite long so the vet should be able to band it I would have thought? one of mine had one (a youngster) and it was banded and gone and nothing came back, not even a sign it was there! No cream nothing, just the band....

The thing you have to remember about stories about alternative things that make them drop off is that some types of sarcoids will drop off themselves anyway so it's difficult to conclude that it the crest or whatever made it drop off .
Even if they drop off remember the herpes virus that cause them is lurking in the horse just waiting for another go.

vet wsnted to freeze the big one off but my wee horse doesnt travel well so i tried sarc ex and thuja cream, its gone now. cost me £70 compared to over £200 from vet!!

Thank you all so much for all of your replies, I spoke to a couple of people on the yard this morning who has had sarcoids removed, and I'm going to speak to the vet to see if it can be lazered or if it will be treated by cream instead. I was told when lazering them it gets the route off so it shouldn't come back but with cream there's a higher possibility that it could come back? Not sure how true that is though will wait to speak to the vet on Wednesday to see if they lazer them.

My boy had about 4-5 sarcoids which we had treated with Liverpool cream. This was over a year ago and not seen anything since *touches wood*. Now there is starting hair regrets over scars so you can barely notice them.
The cream does sting. Luckily my boy is so good and just puts up with it. He even had a small one on his nose so we had to hold him for an hour so he couldn't wipe it off. But it worked and now not so much as a mark there!

My friend's horse had one in the same place and the vets treated it with a corrosive cream that causes the body to, in a way, reject the sarcoid/area the cream is applied, and after 2 weeks it dropped off. Very impressive to see!

I would definitely get it looked at & sorted, our gelding had one by his sheath which was fine all last summer, but when i had to start bringing him in over night for the winter he started catching it & it grew in size considerably. We ended up having his banded to remove it.

Yes you are right the lasering removes a big deep area going back from the sarcoid in hope of reducing as much as possible the chances of regrowth .
They are sore after and have antibiotics and anti inflammatories afterwards as soon as the swelling has reduced enough for the horse to be comfortable you can work the horse and they can go in field staight away but you need to but some sort of barrier cream on to keep the flies out I used FIlta bac from the vet it's an excellent barrier cream . ( also excellent on sunburnt noses)
I got my first tube from the vet but found it on eBay much cheaper so got in from there when I needed more.
Of course they can regrow the horse I had lasered had had them left far to long before I got him so I was unsurprised when two tiny ones reappeared I had them lasered again straight away.
I think the most stubborn ones I had treated with Liverpool cream took eight cycles of treatment before they gave up.

There are a few threads around that suggests Crest Toothpaste is successful, the higher the fluoride content the better. But you have to be onto it 3 or 4 times a day until they go. As someone else has said they get more aggressive if you are half hearted about it.

My little mare had 2 once got the type assessed by my vet and I used Crest toothpaste. Both gone and not returned this was a few years ago.
