Im gutted, had my mare 5 weeks, the day before she came she passed a 5 stage vetting and passed. now brushing her ive found a sarcoid about 3cm from her teats. I know they arent all bad but im just mad that its suddenly came up, is there any home remidies or any good tips to get rid ot them? Thanks

How big and what type is it? Would always recommend a vet, although mine advised me to treat small ones with aciclovir cream. Mine was too big but it didn't have any route and was successfully cut of under local anaesthetic.

Same as above please get your vet to have a look before you start putting things on it, my boy has just had laser surgery to have one removed, lab results came back as an aggressive scaroid.

My horse had 2 one wart looking type on her face big nasty the other like a teat on her belly!! Iused collidal silver put in on twice a day and they vanished within a month and have never come back, i also used it on a wart on mmy hand which i had for years had the dam thing froze so many times at the doctors and still come back!!! used colidal silver on my wart it vanished and has never returned!!! you can use colidal silver on many things, read up on the net about it hun it just worked for me and my horse and a bottle lasts for ages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't panic too much. Get the vet to look but don't go down any drastic treatment road yet.

Sarcoid can appear at times of stress (like moving home). I've got not one but two horses who've developed a sacroid due to stress. The first was a mare who turned out to be in foal and developed a huge nasty sarcoid on her udder and one on her ear. Once she'd settled and had her foal they regressed by themselves and 15yrs later she's only got a discoloured patch of skin and not a single other sarcoid.
Second is a youngster who developed one on his thigh after a very stressful trip over from ireland and being handled for the first time. His again came up nasty and aggressive but a year later it's gone with only a small bald bit and no others appearing.

Both were 'treated' with non-agressive creams (thuja cream) (mainly to make me feel like I was actively doing something; I suspect they'd have regressed regardless) a good aupplement diet.

Don't stress like I did. In 30 years of horse ownership I came across my first sacroids with my current horse last July. He had at least 6 small pimple like ones on his sheath and a massive one that turned nasty on his belly (courtesy of the summer flies). On vet's advice I treated the sheath ones with Zovirax coldsore cream applying once a day. They disappeared very quickly and haven't returned to date over a year later. The other nasty wart like sarcoid was treated with a laser by a surgeon. Has healed very well and the hair has grown back although he has a small lump at the site. Apart from that he seems sarcoid free and fingers crossed will remain so.

Thanks for your help everybody, my friend has gave me some cream she used on her old pony, but the sarcoid is around 5mm wide id say. its just appeared and i think its down to awful flies, but im going to stay on the safe side and give the vets a ring in the morning.

Don't panic! I bought my mare with one - a risk a know!

She has developed a few more in the time I have had her. Vet went through the possible treatments - cutting out, freezing, Liverpool cream or leaving them alone. I have had 1 frozen off (she kept catching it) successfully - it hasn't grown back.

She had a couple of occult ones (the flat ones) on her face, and a couple of nodular ones on each thigh. About 4 months ago I started feeding her Sarc-Ex and most of them have seen an improvement. The ones on her face have gone, and the smaller nodular ones have almost gone. I was quite sceptical about using a supplement, but either it's working, or it is a massive coincidence! I didn't want to go down the Liverpool cream route with the ones on her face as there isn't really anything to 'burn away', and it would probably be very uncomfortable for her.

I go through periods of worrying about them, but try not to! Enjoy your new horse!

thank you for your help everybody but thankfully it was nothing to worry about. After years with horses i have never ever had such a blonde moment! Her 'sarcoid' was her belly button...please dont laugh;) she has a slight infection to a fly bite so ive got cream for that but all in all in good health and good to go

You know, I thought that when I first read your post - but I didn't dare suggest it :D

My 4 year old has a number of them which have sprung up this year although he did have one small one on his sheath last year which remained dormant for some time. His mother had them at the same age and she was treated with the Liverpool Cream. It was very successful but she was in some pain.

Because of the location of junior's sarcoids I decided to try something a little less caustic first. I started with Thuja cream and tablets, as well as Sarc-Ex in his food. There was little if any change but some more did erupt. So I then tried Crest Original Toothpast which dried some up. However he needed to have a couple of baby teeth removed at the Vet's so I asked what I should do. My Vet gave me a small (and expensive, though I haven't got the bill yet) jar of Sarc-Off which is Bloodroot cream. I used it on the sarcoids for 5 days and then stopped. So far I have seen good results. Some have got larger, and thicker beneath the skin, but have scabbed over. Others have scabbed and when the scabs have fallen off have left fresh pink skin beneath. Its still early days; I think I stopped using the cream about a week ago, but there is significant change and improvement so far.

The cream isn't as caustic as the Liverpool Cream (which usually has to be applied by the Vet), but did cause him some discomfort seen by his leg lifting and swishing tail, but it passed off quickly.

Good luck, they are a right pain!
