Look at this beast in my lads ear. I have been worried by it, because I have noticed it has got significantly larger lately
My vet has suggested the best thing is to get it removed, but knowing the nasty stuff they use to treat sarcoids, my ultimatum appears to be don't treat it; it gets bigger, eventually takes over whole ear, or treat it and risk losing part of the ear or end up with a hole through it. Which is the lesser evil? Any one have any experiences with sarcoids in areas like this?

Sorry the pics aren't great, I took them on my phone

Well, a hole in his ear or partial removal is cosmetic, primarily, I would think - so I would treat, without hesitation...

Does anyone know if it will be painful while he is going through the treatment? Just wondering RE. riding / bridling up, or whether just to leave him while its being treated.
:( I can't believe what a mess it looks :(

I knew a stallion who had more sarcoid than ear. It was horrendous.
We used a Crossgates biogenerics cream on it and over a period of a few weeks the growth shrank dramatically.
The stallion was sold(together with his pot of cream!) so I do not know whether the cure was complete.
Here is a link, you might want to call the company for more detailed info.

Ooh thanks abitodd, I wonder whether it would work on my lad, might be something to consider...
Anyone else any ideas for alternative treatments of anything?

I'd have it treated, now is a great time as there are no flys about. I had to have my mares treated last summer as it suddenly got alot worse - would have been alot better without the flys!

This is it just beneath her ear, it got about 3 times larger and more weepy suddenly in the week or so before it was treated

It was sore for her being treated, but she stood like a rock for the injections, and I kept her on bute for the treatment as I hated the idea of her suffering discomfort from it. The treatment was a cisplatin injection once a week for 3 weeks, then it was just left (I covered it from the flys and rinsed it with salt water daily). It took a while, but by about 3 months later there was not even a sign of it - just incredible!!

Def treat, and get a vet out who has experience with them. Best of luck, they are scary things but can respond really well to treatment. Don't what ever you do be tempted to self medicate. Sarcoids are something that should be left for the vet, absolutly never worth tinkering with yourself.

I use global herbs sarc ex and cream, you tie off the sarcoid with plaiting thread whilst feeding stuff and putting cream on, 2 of my mares has fallen off this last month and we have one more to go. Takes a few tubs tho but def less harsh than some other ways ie Liverpool cream

oo thanks for that nuttychestnut mare, ive just had a quick read up on them, and that sounds quite promising, he does seem to have quite a poor immune system, and Im so reluctant to try the drug cream route, I am so worried about it destroying his ear. I will ring them for tomoro for a chat...

A horse at my yard had a sarcoid removed from his ear just over a year ago. You wouldn't even know about it now, as there is not even a trace of evidence that he had it.
He was at the vets for about 4 hours, they tied it off then sedated him to "operate", took longer for him to wake up than to remove (big dopey cob, probably didn't need sedating as sleepy enough!)

He was out of work for a week with a fly mask on as it was summer with an antiseptic cream applied daily, so not to aggravate the area with flies. He came in after a week with no trace of a scar and not been fussed about bridle/headcollar since.

Get it treated, even if he does lose a bit of ear surely this is better than a big lump in it!

Mine had one in his ear surgically removed last September they decided against the cream and went straight for removal. He now has a bit of a dent in his ear but doesn't bother him at all. If you pm me your email address i can send pics but i have no idea how to upload pics on here.

we had a pony with a sarcoid in the exact same place and where the bit goes on the side of his mouth.
we were told it could be treated, 8months later it was still getting worse. summer came and the flies were bothering him so much and the one by his mouth started to prevent him eating so mum had him put down when i was away with dad.
RIP stanley xxx

i would get a referral and take him to liverpool for assessment and treatment. now is the perfect time to treat as minimal flies. Prof Knottenbelt will tell you the expectations of treatment before you start, and you will be given a cost for this. no i wouldnt self medicate/treat.

My vet just emailed pics to Prof Knottenbelt and he gave his thoughts and recommended surgery. Took 20 minutes and was done in his stable with minimal stress.

Scary sarcoids..... I have been through that nightmare. I treated homeopathically a few years ago with fantastic results but I know this is a controversial subject. Keep an open mind, do lots of research and get good professional advice.

my mare had quite a few when I bought her - they had previously been treated with Liverpool cream and came back over time. I choxe to just leave them as they didn't cause her any issues until the one on the iside of her leg got caught on a leg strap and was half hanging off - I tied it off with plaiting thread and cleaned it up and it fell off completely and has never returned after that the other one just shriveled up !! Very odd

I know you can't do that but I would try SarcEx first a lady I met at a show had achived great results with an ear sarcoid using it ! if not then I would go for having it off rather than cream I think
