After starting work at a new yard recently (have worked at lots) it has occurred to me that yards with one horse with sarcoids seem (in my experience) to have several.
Eg- new yard had a awful case and many others on the yard show at least one either obvious sarcoid or warty type thing.
Other yard absolutely nothing. This seems the case where brushes are shared- I have only noticed multiple sarcoid cases in horses stabled and looked after by the same people.
On livery yards though i have known only one sarcoidy horse- maybe because horses are privately owned and therefore use their own equipment????

Opinions!!? Its just i was wondering after a comment made recently by a fellow livery that i must never "contaminate my clean horse by using anything my horse with sarcoids had touched on him"
I know there is no proof but my observations made me think!

You may be onto something there!

Another hypothesis by my vet is that flies might have something to do with it too, and also apparently some horses seem to be immune to them, whereas others just look at a sarcoid and thyve got 6

The brush thing is a definate possibility though :/

I hate the damn things- we recently lost a wonderful mare to sarcoids :(:( such a stupid thing to have to lose a horse too!!

i am very new to the whole sarcoid thing, having got a horse in February which has sarcoids and never having come across them properly til then, but I am erring on the side of caution and making sure she and our other pony don't share any brushes etc, however they do live out together so not sure if this will make too much difference...

It has been suggested that flies will spread them so obviously if a horse on a yard has them and flies feed on that horse the risk of contamination is high as flies can only fly a limited distance to feed on other horses.
I would be surprised if brush sharing would spread them otherwise any horse in contact with a sarcoid sufferer would have them, blood to blood contamination would seem a more likey scenario.

I think there is evidence that they are spread by flies, blood to blood

ah, yes that would also make sense i suppose. I thought it was not infectious It worries me as my new horse has sarcoids and i really dont want my other one getting them aswell.
