My horse has had a sarcoid on her eyelid for a little while now, the vet looked at it today. He is going to be taking photos for Liverpool (what a ridiculous way to get treatment) and as it is nodular it is likely to be suggested a course of BCG injections into the sarcoid. She also has a couple of small verrucous sarcoids on her belly but these don't concern be anywhere near as much as her eye.

My vet said he has treated 4 with BCG, his own success rate in this rather small sample is only 50% but there have been no negative side effects in the other 50% (2!). Just wondering if anyone has any useful info, suggestions, hopeful stories!

She is currently on Global herbs restore and sarc-ex (but only a small dose of sarc ex, she isn't keen on it), she also has a herbal remedy from a local herbalist who is well known locally for having amazing results with sarcoids - since she has been on these in the last 2 weeks her couple of little verrucous sarcoids on her belly are starting to dry up and look like they are kind of crumbling away but the one on her eye hasn't changed.
I have previously had a go with toothpaste on the verrucous ones but it didn't do anything other than make a mess :s

I looked at your link BP. They have photos on there of a horse that died from tetanus. :( A reminder to all to vaccinate for it.

KOAP - I hope the BCG works. On an eyelid, you don't have enough spare flesh to cut it off with the 1cm border that prof K recommended for my mare's possible sarcoid, especially as he didn't want it stitched. So surgical removal sounds like a non starter on an eyelid. So I think that even 50% chance is worth taking in this situation. I've got my fingers crossed for you. :)

It is a good way to get a message across, brave owner to allow the photos though.

The BCG photos showed a completely cleared area with good hair growth, I agree that 50% is a decent chance with little risk involved.

Thanks, that photo is very encouraging. I agree a 50% chance of success is really not bad as long as there really are no bad side effects.

Had a horse treated with BCG, as well as Liverpool cream for several other sarcoids. It was a few years ago now, so cant remember how many treatments he had, but the sarcoid did respond well & almost disappeared. He then had Liverpool cream on the tiny remaining bit. Sadly cant tell you if it was a long term success as the horse was PTS shortly after finishing treatment with internal issues. Wont go into that, but a warning that the sarcoids may have been an outward sign of what was going on inside. Horse was 7 when we lost him.

V.v. sorry to hear the overall outcome for your horse was not good. Were the internal issues related to the sarcoids? I do worry about Kazz's overall immunity as she had a bad start in life until she was 2 when I got her, and then when she was 8 she had a kick injury which set off a massive infection, she was given gentimicin for that but that also damages the kidneys so I do worry about that, that was 8 years ago and she has been in mostly good health since, but all the same my plan is to boost her immune system as much as poss with supplements and lots of general pampering and ensuring she is well cared for so that her body doesn't have to worry about doing anything extra other than getting rid of sarcoids!

Vet taking photos in the morning, hopefully the whole Liverpool process won't take too long.

We never tried too hard to establish link between sarcoids & his other issues as his 12 months was up with the insurance co. as far as sarcoids were concerned. I'm convinced they were an outward sign & my vet said it was possible but lets not discuss it...
Be prepared for all the warnings when you undergo BCG treatment. He has steroid injections with the treatment - I think that was to reduce the risk of reaction to the injection, but steroids may trigger laminitis. I was also left with strict instructions about monitoring him for the few hours immediately after treatment incase of reactions & left with an adrenaline shot I would need to administer + calling vet straight back
My vet said he had treated several horses with BCG & all had improved, most disappeared completely, but some have returned over the years.

My horse was treated successfully with BCG injections to a sarcoid just below her eye last year. I had her of Global herbs Sarc-X and Immune plus and the injections didn't work properly then but as soon as I took her off of them the sarcoid cleared quickly and cleanly and you would be hard pressed to see where it is now. However at that time she was also being treated with Liverpool cream on 2 large ones under her hind legs and they cleared very quickly while she was on the global herbs as well so it seemed to me that global herbs are good in conjunction with Liverpool cream but not with BCG injections. By the way my vet said that he had had a lot of success with BCG injections
