Hi, today i have found a sarcoid on the side of my fillies udder area, i am devasted as she was going to be covered next month and i dont think it would be right to breed from her now. I purchased her at 6 months old with the view to her being my foundation mare for my little stud, this has been my dream for many years. I am getting the vets opinion tomorrow, but what do you all think, the sarcoid is about a 50 pence size. Thanks

Scarcoids can be caused by a virus spread by flies so I would not write her off yet, let the vet have a look and then do some research before you decide what to do, one of mine had one in the past but it simply dropped off of its own accord, and never returned, that was 10 years ago!

Hi thanks for that , the vet is coming in a minute so fingers crossed it wont be all doom and gloom

don't panic!
firstly, the grey in my siggy had terrible sarcoids all her life, loads of them. on retirement (nothing to do with the sarcoids) she bred 2 foals. 1 had a few tiny sarcoids which i treated with newmarket bloodroot ointment and they went completely and never returned (after about 3-4 yrs, still no reoccurence.) the other mare from the same mother is grey and at 6 yrs old still has no sarcoids.
fwiw the first vet i spoke to told me not to breed as they're hereditary. the much more experienced 2nd vet i spoke to, rubbished that theory. they are only contagious between horses of the same blood group (and there are many, can't recall exactly how many though), which is why none of my other horses ever 'caught' sarcoids even though they lived with her for years and flies landed on her sarcoids (which were often open and bleeding, in spite of tons of treatment) and then on the other horses.
hope that helps. bloodroot ointment is brilliant and it works.

My 2 year old filly has just developed a couple of sarcoids (in the past week). One, directly in front of her teats - looks just as if she's grown a third nipple! It's about the same shape and size as her teats, and appeared virtually over night. The second is about 4 inches further in front of the first one, but is flatter, and more mole-like in shape. Had the vet out and he just said, "leave them". He suggested I take a couple of photos and keep and eye on them. If they grow or multiply, I guess he'll be inclined to attempt treating them.

I don't know what caused them but they came around the same time as she was bitten by flies under her tummy - link??? And her dam had a few sarcoids successfully removed when she was about 2. So, could the dam have passed the virus from the dam to the foal?

Poxy things though, aren't they?

Hi,thanks for replies, vet has been and doesnt thing it is a sarcoid, i have to keep an eye on its size and they may take a sample from it to see exactly what it is, but she said to carry on and breed, what a relief. I was so upset yesterday and thought i would never get a foal now im back on track, she is a stunning little fell pony. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

My vet told me that sarcoids are caused by the herpes virus some horses have high immunity to this virus and others have none and every level inbetween! It is this immunity that is hereditary. If the filly is young and developed one then it would suggest that her immunity is on the lower side and therefore if breeding I would just make sure that the stallion I used had a high immunity (i.e don't use a stallion who has had a sarcoid) therefore increasing the chances of the offspring having a higher immunity.
