My 8 year old mare suffers from sarcoids, she has one on her lip,one the inside of her back leg and one next to her udders. She has had treatment on them in early november. The treatment made the skin around the sarcoids go hard and start to peel off and made the area swell up.after a while the areas of skin came off.On her lip the sarcoid hasn't changed but the treatment has made the skin around it sore, and the two others havent worked either:(

Recently the vet gave me a different treatment in the form of a gel called Xxterra.I asked the vet if it would be alright to put it on the sarcoids even though they were still sore from the last treatment she had and he said that it shouldn'd be a problem.I hadn't even finished the treatment when the sarcoids on her leg and belly had opened up and the skin around it had ripped in a number of different places.i stopped putting it on them ones put carried on putting it on her lip.she has now just finished the treatment and is in a lot of pain and acting depressed and recently suffered from colic, the only thing i think caused the colic was her licking off the gel from her lip.I've stopped riding her even though the vet said it shouldnt cause her any pain because she was acting heavy on my hands and not using her hind legs as much as she does normally.I really dont know what to do with her anymore as no treatment has worked and is making her unhappy and really just make her loose the will to live.could anyone give me some advice on what to do?please help!!

We have a horse who had one on the end of his private bit! It got so aggressive and big he ended up having an op to remove. Touch wood he's alright now he's just got 2 melanomas in his jugular area which the vet said to keep an eye on them. If they start getting too big then they may have to be removed. I think there is the Liverpool cream (think this is what it's called) that has been effective but I'm not 100% sure if that's the name. Hope you get your horse sorted, it's not nice at all. :(

We used Liverpool Cream on our ponies sarcoids was very expensive as only the vet can apply. Did look a mess big weeping hole but healed amazingly well so much so that when she was vetted for sale the vet could not see where they had been. Has been clear ever since. Hope you get yours sorted .

I would get a second opinion if it were me, first port of call from your vets should have been to Liverpool to get a report done on the sarcoides then atleast you would know a bit more about what you are dealing with. I would get another vet to take a look at your mare as soon as possible, if your mare is really in pain from it then she should also be on some painkills. Fingers crossed for you, its a horrible situation to be in (having been there myself). Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice:) the first treatment she had was the Liverpool cream but obviously its made them worse:(if they havent shown some improvement by the end of the week i think i might get a second opinion off another vet.The problem is our fields are closed and i havent been riding her because of the sarcoids so when i do get back on her im really going to worry that she'll go crazy and make them all bleed and get worse.:(
