Sarcoid Progression while feeding Sarc-ex

Hi,

I recently purchased a mare with 2 sarcoids on the inside of her left hind. I took a picture of them when she arrived so that I could keep a close eye on their progression. I also immediately put her onto Sarc-Ex having read some encouraging reviews. She’s been on it for just under a month now.

I noticed that the larger of the sarcoids has now turned more pinky/fleshier. Reading online I’m seeing mixed point of views on whether this could be it healing or getting worse. Keen to know if anyone saw a similar behavior in their horses sarcoids when feeding Sarcex!

I’m also so wary of the files at this time of year so any recommendations on how to keep the flies off it are much appreciated!

Re keeping flies off, try Battles yellow summer fly cream, recommended by my vet for my boy’s sarcoids before surgery and then for the scars afterwards. But wear plastic gloves - it stains, which is why my boy (not the one in the pic) constantly has bright yellow bits!

I wouldn't expect occult sarcoids that are basically only marks in the hair to develop in the way that is if it was on its way out. I suspect the stress of moving has upset her immune system a bit, that's a very common thing to happen. They're in a good place to watch and wait and hopefully she will get on top of them soon and the Sarcex shouldn't hurt and might help.

I wouldn't mess with them externally other than fly repellent, whatever encouragement anyone else gives you, they're at a tipping point stage where they can be made quite cross!

Thank you! I must admit my gut told me the same…! I very much intend on taking the wait and see approach, and certainly not doing anything with them until the fly season is over.

Fingers crossed that the Sarc-Ex combined with a gut balancer and fly spray keeps them from getting angry..

I wouldn't have thought it would need any special fly spray, it looks pink but not angry or wet, so wouldn't specifically attract flies. Keep feeding the sarcex and take photos, I do find they get worse before they get better but occult ones do generally fade into nothing, unless this was never truly occult and something under the skin was bubbling away. Much like YCBM has said, topically I would leave them well alone, but no harm done in keep feeding Sarcex

I would recommend patch testing it in a sarcoid free area first, I tried it on the youngster and she had quite a nasty reaction to it. I now hang a citronella tag from the back of her fly rug and drech her in (DEET free) fly spray.

I used Sarc-X when my mare had one, pea sized under the skin on her inner thigh. I must have fed one pot of it, the sarcoid seemed to get bigger, about thumb sized but the skin got thinner and then it just popped out one day shortly after finishing the pot when the vet was checking it. It wasn't attached to anything and didn't bleed. We put yellow fly cream on until the hole had healed up. Didn't put anything on it while it was under the skin though. She didn't get anymore so i felt like it was successful, though slightly alarming that it got bigger first!

That happens with some types. My previous horse had one that sounded similar, it ‘shelled’ itself into the vet’s hand. Biopsy showed it was a sarcoid. Hole healed, never had another. Didn’t use any of the supplements, it just went by itself!
