i am currently treating one of my horses sarcoids with the cream topical treatment, i am just a bit concerned because it looks like it is taking away a bit of the skin from around the edge of the sarcoid as well, is this normal? has any one else had to treat a sarcoid or does anyone have pictures of the treatment process???? what barrier cream should i use around the edge of the sarcoid?

any advice or info will be very greatfull :-)

Which cream are you using?

I had a horse treated with Liverpool cream. The sarcoid fell off really quickly, but the cream had affected the skin around it which hardened up and eventually fell off too after a couple of months or so.

Hi,

its a cream from a vets but very similar to the liverpool cream, did you apply direct to the sarcoid or around the base of it? did you ave to apply a barrier cream to the skin close to it? sorry loads of questions it just doesnt look very nice the skin rond the edge looks like its being eaten away a bit is that normal? let me se if i can send you a pic.

:-)

Liverpool cream can only be applied by a vet. The vet just smothered it, but obviously it did touch the skin around it.

The skin never looked raw or anything, but I could tell it had effected it. But because Liverpool Cream is massively toxic I didn't get that close to it to have a good look at where the cream was and was not (under belly so diff area!)

Not on that horse no, and the skin has taken a long time to heal over.

I know several horses that have been treated with LC. Some of them returned and some didn't.... Think it's a bit of a lottery.

My boy had liverpool cream applied over 5 days (vet came every day) on 7 sarcoids around his groin. A month later there is lots of inflammation and the sarcoids and surrounding skin is rock hard and starting to peel around the edges showing v pink skin below......looks vile and where the sarcoids were the size of 20p piece, the toughened skin lesions are now about 3" in diameter each!

Thanks Victoria,

thats whats happened to mine, the sarcoid hasnt swollen yet but the surrounding skin is pink where the skin hardened and came off and the sarcoid is turning black.

what do you do about fly protection as i dont want to aggravate it so i have just left them.

have you just left the surrounding skin as well or have you put anything on it?

ive not really wanted to touch them because a) I thought it would be sore and b) I didnt want to get kicked! However, he has been asking to have his "bits" scratched so I did and they are obviously getting very itchy as he is turning himself inside out when I scratch around the sarcoids! So Will be sudocreming the edges I think

My vet recommended using Vaseline as a barrier. The only sign of the sarcoid now is a tiny area of hairless skin.

Are you going to use a preventative supplement once the treatment is finished?

My chap is on his second treatment with Liverpool Cream. The first scab came off and there was still cells underneath. Not a good time of year to do it with the flies but it was a case of stamp on it quick! I have been syringing with salty water, which is obviously a bit 'ouchy' to start with but it seems to be working well. He let me kneel in front of him and do it last night - which is a first and glad to see it is looking much better. Have also used Sudocreme on the skin around it - not sure about that one as it contains chemicals but it doesn't seem to have done any harm. But think the salty water is doing the trick. It is on the chest muscle by the way and the size of my tea mug.

My boy had one treated with Liverpool cream early last year, his was the size of a ten pence piece with a flat head, it was on his head near where his bit sits and every time i rode it took the top off and started bleeding. The vet applied the cream and the head dried out went black and the whole thing just got smaller and smaller and now I would be hard pushed to find where it was. Nothing has returned and the whole thing only took 3 weeks for it to pretty much dissapear.
hope this helps
Teresa

Slightly off subject as it's not the LC but the horse I had on the short term loan (PY, you may of pics in my previous posts) he a hand full of sarcoids, one on his eye, under his elbow, on his side, 2 near his girth area (of varoius types/sizes)

He's had some BCG injections and the one on his eye, side, under his elbow is (that one is shrinking away), but all others have all completely gone, same goes for another horse that belongs to a livery, had 2 large ones, on the face and one on the elbow, both gone and no other sarcoids have appeared else where as yet.

I think my horse has a sarcoid which I have only just discovered on his sheath. He's only 4 year old and I am quite worried about it....it's quite small and looks like a wart. An equine vet is coming on Tuesday to look at it.

I've read lots of forums and there seem to be so many different treatments. There seems to be positive and negative feedback on most of the treatments e.g. Liverpool, Xterra, Thuja etc... I've also looked at a lot of American forums and a few people have suggested using Crest toothpaste..has anyone else used this and does it really work???!!

Advice on any of the above would be greatly received!!

My 10 year old mare had a sarcoid in the folds of skin at the top of her front leg when she was 5. I wasnt too concerned so waited for her annual booster a few weeks later. The vet took measurements and gave me the option of either keeping an eye on it or going down the Liverpool cream route. I took the first and within about a year whilst grooming her one day I noticed it had completely disappeared! It has not as yet returned or spread to any other part of the body so my advice would be if they are not causing any problem leave well alone. I have seen horses treated with the Liverpool cream and alternative treatments (even elatic bands!) and sadly none worked and infact they spread. I would really say to take advice from a good honest vet and not to panic - I was told they are often caused by stress in young horses and they can grow out of them. Hope this helps.
