Sarcoid Treatment

I know this is a stupid question but is it recommended not to use liverpool cream in fly season because it bleeds or? sorry i have never delt with sarcoids before and no idea?

I think so, Liverpool Cream is very strong and I don't suppose it is a good idea to have flies spreading it around.

Does anyone know a good fly cream (rather than spray) that I could cover the sarcoid with? is that a good idea?

If i remember lightly, liverpool cream will turn it into a wound which may be a quite nasty until healed. So flies will be drawn to it. There is no real proof that flies can spread it, more like you need to be aware that they might spread sarcoids.
My vet advised me to put vaseline on it just to help the skin. He said horses skin is not very good and the sarcoid still has skin so try and look after it. I figure vaseline may act as a barrier for the flies to?

Surely if Prof Knottenbelt thought horses should not be being treated with Liverpool cream for sarcoids during the warmer months he wouldn't supply it to vets during the summer. My horse is starting treatment with the cream in a couple of weeks and I have bought some Carr and Day Protection Plus gel which is good to use on wounds and contains citronella. I will apply it around the sarcoids and hopefully it should repel the flies and not irritate the sore area.

Very good point FPErin.
I would just check with your vet before putting anything else near/on it whilst undergoing treatment tho. I wonder if you will be advised to stable when the flies are at there worst?
Let us know how it goes.

When Toto had a sarcoid, the vet gave us something called Bloodroot ointment. It was bright orange!

But it worked very well, and soon after we started applying it, the sarcoid dropped off and has never come back

Hope vet doesn't want horse stabled as I don't have one! Thankfully we don't have open water nearby so flies aren't too bad. Vet already said I'd be able to put fly repellant around the area treated but not on it. TBH I don't even know if I'll get near her to put on the fly gel once she starts undergoing treatment as they are on her inner thights and udder, well within kicking distance! Vet has said she may leave me bute to give her whilst treatment is ongoing so obviously expecting a bit of pain. Apparantly I will be given a fact sheet supplied by Derek Knottenbelt once the treatment starts so hopefully that will outline do's and don'ts to adhere to.
