Sarcoid trouble

My boy has had what I can only describe is a Sarcoid for about 18months. It's slightly unsightly, close to his hock. It has never appeared to cause him any pain or discomfort and has never changed. Tonight when I brought Him in I was horrified to see that the top was knocked off it, it had obv been bleeding but had stopped and looked ok if a bit messy. I cleaned it all up. There was black gunky stuff at the start but once I washed it with a sponge and botanica wash a few times it cleaned up well. It's now a wound. It has no depth so I know it's not a puncture would. It's not seeping or bleeding but it obv doesn't have a scab. I'm goin to keep a very very close eye on him but what would you do? It doesn't warrant calling the vet but if it had been a Sarcoid what will happen to it now? It's closeish to his hock which is also worrying me a bit. He is completely sound. Any advice is appreciated!
 
If it was a sarcoid you may be lucky and find that it now disappears or unlucky and it comes back bigger, I would do as much as you can to keep flies off it but try not to disturb it too much while it heals, having your fingers crossed that it goes away, if it does come back get the vet to have a look in case that is a trigger for it coming back bigger or spreading elsewhere.
 
I used battles summer fly cream, the thick yellow one when my mare's sarcoid was being got at by the flies. It kept the flies off and mysteriously the sarcoid dropped off too. Now I'm not sure if it would be ok over a more open wound but it certainly worked for us. I have been told that the best protection for open sarcoid bleeding wounds is Vaseline as it serves as a fly barrier but does not encourage cell renewal in the same way healing creams would, which could encourage the sarcoid to grow back. If it was me I'd probably Vaseline and then apply the battles cream on the surrounding areas.
 
Brilliant thanks for the advice. Is the only way to check for sure if it's a Sarcoid to get it tested?

It's gel-like in texture, is an amazing fly repellent and since using it, one of Kai's sarcoids has fallen off and the other two are growing necks (ie the main nodule is separating from the skin). Not sure if it's a coincidence but since one theory about sarcoids is that they are viral, I figure it may be helping. It's certainly doing no harm, anyway :)
 
Only your vet can tell you if it's melanoma.

But it would seem that you're doing everything right. And I would agree that keeping an eye on it is the best thing to do at the moment.
 
Thanks amymay. It's practically healed now which I'm so surprised, but pleased with! It now looks much like it did before he knocked it but it doesn't stick out as much if you get me. He has been very good to have it bathed too which is soo unlike him normally he's a nightmare so it mustn't be too sore. I'm so glad as I nearly died when I seen it because it was so close to his hock. Will get vet to have a look when he's out doing vaccs dying to know what it is!
 
Bit late responding but my mare has something like this under her saddle - i assumed it was a sarcoid but vet came out and said it was actually a melanoma as, like yours, the top kept coming off and black gunge came out... (i believe there were more technical reasons but sounds like yours!)

Anyway he said ignore it, unless it gets a lot bigger - it might/it might not. At the moment it seems to be staying about the same size so i am just ignoring it!
