Sarcoids and costs

Hi all! 3-4 cm mixed type sarcoid- fairly flat with some verrucous growths now, been flat for a year or so before that.
Vet agrees with me on Laser treatment, with cream to follow- we’re waiting til the end of the season unless it changes before then and forces the treatment forwards. It isn’t in an area where it’s causing issues.

It had them lasered on my cob. As he was having an op for something else it made sense to do it all at the same time. The holes left were huge and they all regrew to exactly the same as they had been before. I then used Liverpool cream, which wasn’t particularly pleasant, but it did clear them all permanently.

We got little cob layered. He had 5 removed, 1 large, ulcerated one from his thigh, 3 from his sheath and a tiny one off the other hind leg. Cost under £400, healed at lightning speed with no further treatment or issues xx

I know this isn't what you are asking but my sincere advice would be if it isn't broken, don't fix it. If it's dormant and isn't causing any issues, then keep an eye on it for any chances but leave it well alone. I know a few horses who have had one, and then had treatment and it seemed to multiply and several came up, or the one grew back either just as bad or worse. There has been some anecdotal success with flour mixed with salt, known on Facebook as 'The Sarcoid Cure' (you do have to sift through the 'miracle' posts a bit but it's well worth a look for a non-invasive and cheap method to try). I had success removing one bulbous one on his sheath this way after approx 4.5 weeks of application, but then decided to leave them all be.

I looked into it extensively as I had a horse with multiple but none were weepy or bleeding, they didn't much change and didn't affect him ridden or in any other way. He had them on sheath, inside back legs, in one 'armpit', one on his chest and one on his side.

It isn’t dormant sadly- the verrucous changes have happened since October. It was flat then.

Liverpool cream I think is the way forward. But be warned, it's nasty stuff. No idea of cost. Do it out of fly season if you can.

My mare had hers removed by freezing. No bad effects and never returned. Backed this up with a homeopathic remedy. (Traditional Vet used who also used homeopathy). I saw a result of using Liverpool cream and would personally never use it.

I have had 3. One elderly horse had them when he arrived. Quite a few on his bum, but not anywhere the tack goes. Not treated, and never changed.
Two NF colts had them appear around 2 years of age. One pendulous 'mushroom' I banded with tail hair. Fell off overnight and no sign since. The other about an inch diameter and flat I left alone. It disappeared after a year or so. I couldn't find where is was now if I tried.

I wonder how many people attribute disappearing sarcoids to treatment that would have gone on their own?

I tried this, and whilst I had some changes in the sarcoids I have to admit it was a complete faff as the cream makes a terrible mess as it melts into an oily gloop in the summer and freezes solid in the winter, and I do think it aggravates the sarcoid as Jacob wasn't best keen on having it on. It's also quite expensive at £45 for about a months' worth of herbs and £20 I believe for the cream - albeit cheap compared to Sarcex which would have been over £70 for his dose. I guess though that I just wasn't as committed as I needed to be as his sarcoids weren't bothering him.

I’ve already had the treatment plan checked by Liverpool Veterinary Hospital’s Sarcoid team, so happy with the course agreed- I wouldn’t do anything without running past the team first, but thank you for all your help and advice ??

I think that's really important, rather than relying on what a first opinion vet would do.

My mare's sarcoid pic (it's a tricky one) has been sent off for Prof Knottenbelt to evaluate.
