As I suspected, my vet has confirmed that a lump on the inside of my mare's leg is a sarcoid. It has come up really fast and is the size of a small grape. It is under the skin and isn't at all sore which is good. He has advised Liverpool Cream but warned that it can be painful and so will be prescribing her bute 😳 Any experiences with this? I keep reading horror stories about this stuff!

My boy had a couple of sarcoids (they actually found 5 altogether) and I decided to have them lasered off. I had this done and was back riding him 2 weeks later, albet, gently. He was healed completely within 6 weeks. Like yours, the main big one came up really quickly. Three others were tiny warts (so I thought) and the last one just under the skin. 18 months on no return he experienced very little discomfort.

My friends horse however had the Liverpool Cream treatment - twice as they recurred. Poor chap has been so uncomfortable and in pain even on a high dose of bute. He has been kicking the stable walls and he looked totally depressed. This has gone on for the second time, for about 8 weeks.

I know which treatment I prefer.

My horse had a sarcoid on the inside of his forearm - this was back in the days when the owner was allowed to administer the cream themselves. Main problem was keeping flies away; the cream created a hole over ten times the size of the sarcoid - the horse (a four year old) was laid off work until it healed. It never had any other sarcoids and was PTS at 26 due to old age, having evented to intermediate and 1*.

My horse has had two sarcoids. The one under his belly was quite big and I could feel the root growing. It was treated with Liverpool Cream (approx 3 applications I think) and the horse hardly noticed. The one at the top of his tail was lasered off and again the horse hardly noticed. I do have a friend who hates the cream though.

Two of mine have had the liverpool cream one tolerated it really well, and he's had to have it twice, my mare was a bit more sensitive to it but still fine and her sarcoids never returned and it's been nearly 6 years. The gelding got them in different places each time. If they ever do come back I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

Thank you everyone who has replied. It's reassuring that you'd happily use it again. I will ask about lasering too. How long were your horses off work?

One of my horses had five treated at the same time with Liveool cream. I was really surprised at how well he tolerated the applications. He didn't have bute and didn't need sedation when it was applied - and the vet would sedate any horse that twitched a muscle when he was near it! I gave him a prelanned holiday as I had heard horror stories but he could have easily been kept in work. The sarcoids stabbed over for quite a few weeks and then the scabs fell off and it was all healed underneath.

I had a horse with four sarcoids treated with Liverpool Cream. No bute needed, no pain shown from the horse. Sarcoids haven't come back so I would use again if needed.

My horse had quite a grisly sarcoid under her tummy. Vet treated it with Liverpool cream, my horse didn't mind, no side effects, the sarcoid disappeared and there has been no recurrence 7 years on.

My youngster (3yo) was treated this year for multiple sarcoids. A big one on the base of his ear, two in his armpit, one on his sheath and a couple of flat suspected ones between his back legs. Vet sedated him each time, although used less and less each time and the last application we just twitched him because the cream is essentially being applied to dead tissue now so they can't actually feel it.
The only one he seemed to bother about was the one on the base of his ear which he just tried to rub every now and again, like it was annoying him rather than painful.
If he ever has any more I wouldn't hesitate to use it again. My boy isn't brave and is a bit of a drama queen if he cuts his leg etc, but he never showed any sign of being in real pain, I'd say he was slightly uncomfortable at times at the very worst!

Just to add, vet gave bute but he flatly refused to eat it in anything. Vet said not to force the issue if he wasn't in pain.

My pony had his small sarcoid lasered but it returned. He then had Liverpool cream which was not traumatic and did not require sedation. He lives out. The sarcoid formed a hard crust which stayed for months protecting the site. When it dropped off there was clean healed skin underneath and no problem since.

Hello, if you are considering using the Liverpool Cream (Real name AW5) I would recommend reading the information on the Professor Derek Knottenbelts new company website www.equinesarcoid.co.uk. There is a lot to get through, but it is very helpful! Also, there is a new Facebook page "Equine Medical Solutions Ltd" which will be sharing helpful information and before-and-after photographs to help owners make an informed decision about their sarcoids!
If you get your vet to refer through them it is £36 for a consultation fee which will cover for 12 months. Derek will assess photographs of the sarcoid and advise your vet with what is the best treatment for your horses' sarcoids (sometimes he does recommend other treatments than the AW5).

My mare had four sarcoids treated at the same time with the Liverpool cream (slightly different formulations for two of them), slight swelling on one of the sites, no return after ten years. If anything had a sarcoid I'd have no hesitation using it again. I have seen banded and lasered sarcoids return with a vengeance, I've also seen them successfully treated.

My mare had Liverpool cream treatment to several sarcoids some years ago. She was fine for the first couple of applications but on return visits needed sedation as they obviously caused her pain. She was prescribed Bute but wouldn't eat it. The sarcoids haven't returned. I would however consider banding a grape type sarcoid rather than going for the cream as the cream is nasty stuff and did burn a large hole in my mares armpit and left a big scar.

My boy had the Liverpool cream 3 years running for his sarcoids in sheath area. He did need sedating after first couple of times the cream was applied but otherwise was his usual cheeky self :)
Finally got rid of them.
I would give a lot of thought if had to use again but had tried other methods with no luck.
The crater left when sarcoid was knocked of was huge!

My mare had 2 lots of treatment for 2 different types of sarcoids, a couple of years apart. She never needed sedating for any of the treatments, she was on bute for a couple of days after the last treatment both times. All healed well and never re occurred.
