Horse has a sarcoid beside his eye & vet is going to start BCG vaccinations in it next week.
Just want some re-assurance as he has scared me - apparently some horses can react to it & die!!
He also said if I do nothing it will likely grow too big to manage & horse may have to be PTS anyway, so have decided to go with treatment - just hoping for some positive vibes / good result stories

Don't panic, honestly you'll be very pleased with the results, a horse I used to ride (see pictures in my profile) had various sarcoids dotted around his body but the one that caused serious concern was the one in the corner of his eye, he had a series of BCG injections and all cleared up.

Also my friends horse has a few sarcoids, including one near the bit area near the chin and one behind his shoulder, big ugly things that started to bleed, again a course of BCG and everything went and still nothing has come back.

The vet will warn you of the worst, it's their job to, some horses will loose a bit of condition and it will knock them for six for a short while (like a mild virus) but after 4 months (or however long it takes) they will be back to normal and the sarcoids will go, certainly worth it, so don't get worried, look forward to treatment instead. :)

I have seen a pony's sarcoide on her eye lid treaded with the BCG injection. The pony had many sarcoides over her and other methods were used on them but the one by her eye could only be treated with the injection. It had a faster result than the other methods used and healed really well. We were all very supprised with the results as the mare had had the sarcoides for nearly 2 years and they were quite big and there was lots of them.

The BCG injection would be my choise of treatment if possible if my horse got sarcoides.

Good luck.

I may have to have this for my mare...is it expensive? Only asking as I'm now excluded on my insurance as I've treated sarcoids before and I'm getting desperate!

works well. your vet will make provisions in case of a reaction. cost wise usually about 3 or 4 injections, plus sedation, plus call outs.its the sedation and call outs which put the costs up. one of mine was done with bcg about 9 yrs ago and it was about 400 i think. sarcoid completely gone, hasnt returned and only a small bald patch left. Good luck with yours
