Bailey has a small greyish scaley lump (not bigger than 5p piece) at the very base of his ear (the bottom "point" if that makes sense!).

We initially thought it was him rubbing his ear on his door and catching the light switch and it hasn't got any smaller or any larger (that I can recall). The light switch was covered and there was no improvement; YO thinks it may be a sarcoid.

I have the vet coming out next week for vaccinations and will be asking them to have a look at him and deal with a course of action;I have done a bit of looking on the Liverpool University website re sarcoids as I've not had to deal with them before...to be honest I think I have frightened myself a bit, particularly with the success rates of the sarcoids actually going and the fact that once they have them, they are likely to continue coming back.

Has anyone got any words of advice etc to help and hopefully stop me panicking!

Very worried :(

Hi, I have a grey Arab mare who has had 3 sarcoids. Each time I have treated them homeopathically and they have eventually dropped off. It took longer than other treatments, and, especially wiht the last on on her chest there was a certain amount of having faith and toughing it out. However, the one on her belly, which was one of those that looks like a raised disc, the one on her leg that was little and black, and the one on her chest that got about the size of a 50p, raised and with red bits (!!) - all gone and hair growing over the scars. Crossgates Farm have been brilliant, or you could ask your vet for a referal to a holistic vet. I'm in the South East and the closest to me is Tim Couzens in West Sussex.
So, don't panic yet, sarcoids can be very treatable.

Ted had loads around his sheath and one inside a hind leg when he was four. The sort that look like little warts. The vet said leave them, they sometimes go of their own accord on young horses. They kept growing and then falling off. One winter I fed him Sarc-X (I think it was called) from Global Herbsand they all disappeared. Coincidence or not? I don't know. He still gets one or two from time to time and then they just go. Have a look if you want.

Best thing is to ask your vet - there are lots of different kinds. But don't panic. Lots of horses seem to live with them without having aggressive treatments. If you do a search on here you will find loads of threads and frighten yourself!

There is lots of different treatments at the moment for sarcoids!
If Bailey has one then it isnt the end of the world.
Its very easy to get on websites and scare yourself with pictures of sarcoids and horror stories that people have of them.
I did the same recently looking for pics of juvenille warts that were like the ones on my tbx. And Id already seen them on other young horses as well!
What you need to do is get a proper diagnoses from the vet. To make extra sure its a sarcoid and not some other weird bump horses are prone to get!
Sarcoids Ive seen havent been grey? they have seemed more black to me but thats in my experience-i havent seen the lump Bailey has!
And if its not bothering him and he isnt making it sore or bleed then thats often a good sign? sorry I cant offer more advice :( but good luck and let us know what happens when the vet visits :)

I've started giving him Sarc-X at the moment and am waiting for some kind of result...or not! Lol. I have a cream from global herbs but think I will lay off of it although they say to use it in conjunction with the supplement. Maybe leave it be and wait for vet opinion...vet will be out again (for 2nd time) in just over a month anyway so I guess they can look next week and play the waiting game until they next see him.

Over anxious mum I think; just that "trying to educate" by looking on internet and scaring myself instead.

I looked at that website as I had heard he was head honcho on sarcoids :)

It is like a scaley grey - almost looks like ringworm although it isn't. It wasn't doing anything until I put a cream on it and then part of it started going red but it isn't bleeding or anything and you can touch it - even on the bit that is a little red and he doesn't do anything.

It only started going red once I put the cream on...have been undecided as to whether it is actually doing something and should continue, or whether should leave it and see what it does...although they say time is of the essence?

So confusing.

Will take some pics on Friday/Saturday and do a post then so you can see :)

The good thing is that sarcoids are quite common so vets have lots of experience with them. Sometimes they can be left untreated for quite some time and they have no detrimental effect, but it's best to get them taken off.

I know of one case a horse had them round his sheath, took a while but he hasn't had any since they sorted it. They think that one reason why they come up again is cos of flies so winter is best time to remove. Also creams can work.

I've known quite a lot of horses with them, my horse has got one and I'm not too scared...maybe I'm just naive! I just want it dealt with before I try to sell him as it makes them very hard to sell.

Hope my ramblings help to calm you down. Just see what the vet says, all horses and sarcoids are different.

Hope it's all ok

My boy is 14 and had a small lump appear in his girth area which the vet diagnosed as a sarcoid a few months ago.

It was frozen about two months ago and has scabbed over and dropped off, he now has a small bald patch which is slowly 'hairing' over - allbeit a little white. This was only small, about the size of a penny, but raised and was bleeding when he knocked it hence having it treated as I was concerned it would get infected.

Also his field mate has had a small one removed in a similar fashion from his face and this was a few years ago with no further occurances. So don't worry it's not the end of the world as many are very treatable.

I did the Sarc-X for three months and it was about a month after I stopped feeding it that they dropped off. But could have been coincidence. I read somewhere that they multiply in summer and grow in winter, or the other way round so I guess it's not unusual for them to come and go.

My horse had several lumps appear after I bought him. They were in various locations and different types, shapes and sizes of warty/sarcoid type growths.
I kept an eye on them and left them alone as fortunately they weren't in locations that were a real pain.

Then this summer a couple of them started to grow which obviously concerned me. He had one between his front legs that got bigger and started to bleed and I was worried about flies and was contemplating calling the vet out. Then I noticed that it was bleeding as it was coming away from the trunk of his body so again I decided to give it a bit more time and make sure he was as protected as I could against the flies. Within a week or so, as the growth separated from his body it started to shrivel and fell off. Wierdly within the next week another two just fell off and then a few weeks on a large one inside his back legs did exactly the same thing, started to bleed and separate and fell off. Another month later, another one had a growth spurt and then fell off in the same manner. Very strange!

He still has a couple of small ones on his sheath which I keep my eyes on but I'm glad I didn't rush to have the vet out. I guess I was lucky with their location and that they weren't bothering my horse so I felt able to observe them. I was also reluctant to put creams etc on when there are so many people who've posted on here with their good and bad experiences that make you realise that dealing with sarcoids is a bit of a mine field.

So far, I've left well alone and it paid off, but maybe next time it'll be a different story...who knows with sarcoids

My boy had one for a whole year,I used blood root cream 1st and it worked to a extent, but Sarcoid was VERY stubborn and didnt want to go,so vet used another cream.Sarcoid now gone!!!!

See what your vet says. From your description it might be an occult sarcoid, they are flat and look rather as you describe. It's best to know what it is before you try to treat it.
