Sarcoids - going of own accord?

My horse developed a small sarcoid under his stomach. Had absolutely nothing there when vetted (5*, pernickity horse vet which is why I had him!) and when I tried him. Vet was going to try some creams but in the interim (over a period of only 3 weeks) I tried another cream which a friend was also using on her own mare (with sarcoids)

So, its gone. Completely. Before I wax lyrical about this, can sarcoids be seasonal? It "could" be the cream as my friends mare (also gray) has got rid of hers too..

I wanted to check as had felt that flies were making it worse, so then put him in a flyrug with belly flap to keep them off but then wondered if cold weather, no flies meant it could calm down of its own accord.?
 
they can regress. My friend started hers on Sarc-Ex while waiting for the vet to come out a few weeks later and thats disappeared too
 
TBH if they have one once there is always a chance they may come back. I had 2 lots removed from my boy as a 3yo, hes 7 now and no sign of them. I think when they appear in young horses, if blasted early on it seems to do the trick. In older horses, i dont know. I'd put your horse on sarc-ex (global herbs) for a couple of month - its a bit of a detoxer and pumps the immune system. After that cross your fingers and keep an eye open. Lets hope they dont come back - blasted things!!!!
 
My mare had 3 when I brought her under her stomach on her belly button line flat circular ones.

I did get Thuja cream but I was not the best at remembering to put it on, eventually I just smothered them with sudo cream to keep the flies off during the summer and forgot about them over the winter as she had a much worse injury to worry about.

Once she had lost her winter fluff, bingo none there and no more, so far touching wood.
 
Is it actually a sarcoid or a wart ? I moved to different grazing for a few months with my horses and all three (a 2 yr old and two adults) developed a wart, which then disappeared without any treatment after a couple months and didn't return.
 
Sarcoid - my vet looked at it as it was nasty and seemed to be growing on a daily rate. It also started weeping when the cream went on but I did perserve and cover it with the cream and the fly rug. Oh well we will see!
 
That sounds like good news. I was too worried to leave sarcoids as I understood that you had to get them dealt with sooner rather than later, so I jumped on them as soon as I saw them. But would be fab if they just went on their own

Or it could be the cream but I was under the impression that creams didn't really help so was seeing if they could "self destruct"!

Just pleased its gone and hope it does not come back!
 
H (25yo) had a couple when he was younger. One disappeared completely overnight, and the other is much smaller than it was.

Spud has a variety of strange semi-benign lumps. Vet has never been too concerned, but the large one on his face disappeared overnight, too.

However, I knew another mare who used to grow sarcoids like they were going out of fashion. She had a batch removed as they were bleeding and sore, and the horsepital said she was the worst case they'd ever seen. The rapid growth of hers seemed to be triggered by an unrelated illness, but once they'd started they didn't stop. So I guess you never know....
 
My first horse had a sarcoid on her face and it did disapear over time. My current horse has a sarcoid on her tight that I have discussed with the vet in depth. We were leaving it to see what happened and it has had a tiny growth spurt so we have decided to remove it before it gets invloved in the vein on her thigh as it will make it more complicated to remove then. We are waiting for the flies to die down and then it will get taken off.
It seems to depend on the kind and place of the sarcoid to depend on the treatment from my experience of them.
 
I had a very similar thing when I bought my horse a few years back, not long after I got him he developed a sarcoid on his chest which grew quite big, as it wasn't interfering with anything I took my vets advice and didn't treat it, the only thing I did was feed a herbal supplement for 6 months. One day it literally fell off! I wrote to Dr Derek knottenbelt (sarcoid expert) at Liverpool University and he said that some horses will self heal, they're not sure why some do and some don't, but it can happen. So I'm not sure if the herbs helped or not. That was over 5 years ago though and it hasn't come back.
 
I've had a couple of horses with them come for "behavioural rehab" and had them clear up when the horse's other problems were solved. The immune system is a funny thing - it stands to reason a physically and mentally healthy horse with have a better chance of fighting off anything invasive, or at least keeping the balance.
 
A percentage of horses will "self-cure" especially if they have them when they are young and they very rarely reoccur as the horse has developed an immunity to them. I have had two horses with sarcoids (both developed between 3 - 4 years of age). I kept an eye on them, they were not treated in anyway and they all regressed.
 
I found several on my horse shortly after I bought him four years ago. Missed on vetting as he had been left unclipped, I found them when I clipped him. Samples were sent off and sarcoids confirmed. My vet ordered Liverpool cream, but it took ages to arrive, and by the time it did they had more or less gone so I didn't treat them. They haven't come back. Vet said they can sometimes be caused by stress and as he'd recently come over on the boat from Ireland it kind of made sense.
 
This is really interesting as I recently bought a young horse, he had 5 sarcoids noted on the vetting but I decided to let him settle in before starting treatment. After a couple of months they all dropped off! I have been wondering if they will come back.
 
my mare had a sarcoid on her eye meveryone knew her being the mare with the sarcoid, with it being there i was reluctant to touch her there, i moved yards and it completely went and hasnt returned 5yrs on. although it could well do, i wondered wether it was to do with stress as well as flies.
 
My instructor brought an extremely hormonal mare last year from Wales. When she got her back to Surrey she turned her out and she went crazy and was a nightmere!! The owner then thought best to not turn her out anymore. After no turnout the mare started coming out with sarcoids between her back legs. When vetted she had none and all in about 3 months she had as much as 7!!

We put it down to hormones and change in how she was kept as she was very stressed all the time!! Not sure whats shes like now as they sold her (or gave her away?!)
