Sarcoids on face - Liverpool Cream experiences

Hi, my handsome boy has been diagnosed with sarcoids on his face and our vet is advocating Liverpool Cream Treatment. Can you share your experiences of treating sarcoids on your horses face with Liverpool Cream please as I have a few worries?

Liverpool cream has worked with every horse I have seen treated with it. However, IME it has been extremely sore during treatment and horses have had to be sedated by the vet each time. They also sometimes have a lasting reluctance to let you touch them in that area ever again.

Have a look at this thread before trying it. Far less painful and expensive. It takes a lot longer to work and in some cases doesn't work at all, in others takes only a few days:

Of all the horses I have treated with Liverpool cream (a lot, I do all of the sarcoid treatments in my practice), I have never had to sedate one. There are been a few that needed twitching and front leg held up for sarcoids in the sheath/udder region, but otherwise horses generally tolerate it very well. I have done second courses on some horses and they have still been good.

Every horse is different in terms of how sore they get, and the type of sarcoid and depth of root plays a big part. Liverpool will advise if they think it is likely to be deep rooted or become sore, and will usually suggest bute if this is the case. But overall I would say I see more cases that come with these wanings from Liverpool that DON'T get sore than do.
 
Hi Wagtail, thanks for your feedback. That's exactly what I'm worried about, him not letting me anywhere near him with a bridle after the treatment, the three patches he has are all along bridle lines. I have read several posts about Crest toothpaste with interest, but on speaking to my vet about feeding a herbal supplement (Global Herbs Sarc-Ex) he recommended that I didn't interfere with him too much and that he expected success with the Liverpool Cream. x
 
Hi Murphy88, thanks for your feedback. Could you tell me anymore about horses that were treated for sarcoids on their face please? My boy has 3 (at the moment) - near/ under cheek piece, nose band and flash band and I'm worried that he won't let me near him with a bridle after the treatment. x

The Liverpool cream will undoubtedly successfully treat the sarcoids. It seems from people that have used it on the horses face that it does not cause them to be head shy. This may be because the sarcoids on the face are generally smaller and may have a shallower root. However, if you have any doubts, then there really is no harm in trying the toothpaste as this does not hurt one bit and seems to have quite fast results on small sarcoids. I am treating a large one and it is shrivelling up and bits are falling off right now.

However, I don't think that your horse would associate bridling with the soreness caused by the cream, so long as they have properly healed before you put the bridle on, and so long as you use a different type of head collar for treatment. For example use a rope halter in a different colour to his normal headcollar or bridle. Perhaps put a perfume on it, so that he will not associate other head collars or bridles with the treatment.
 
A mare I had years ago had a huge fibroblastic sarcoidosis just in front of her girth, between her front legs, horrible looking thing, always weeping and sore. I contacted Dr Knottenbelt and he was ready to give her a try with the Liverpool cream, but miraculously it disappeared before we started - all we used was Terramycin spray and flyspray but she hated having that area touched whilst it was 'live'.

Weirdly she was ok with us touching her there once it had all gone but had a real aversion to any sprays! Still don't know what made it go away though.
 
I have mare who has just come to the end of treatment for sarcoids. She had 3 that needed treatment - 1 high up under each hind leg and 1 right by an eye. The 2 under hind legs were treated by Liverpool cream and the 1 by her eye by BCG injections.
It has been interesting in that at the same time as she was being treated I was feeding her Global Herbs Sarc-X and Immune-Plus - I hoped that they would help and certainly the 2 under her hind legs cleared very quickly and are healing up beautifully but the 1 on her eye was slow to react to the injections so much so that Liverpool reccommended 2 extra sets on injections at 4 weekly intervals after the 1st course was finished. At the same time as the first of the extra injections I stopped feeding the Global Herbs products and the sarcoid under her eye almost immediately started to change and is now nearly gone and it looks like that she won't need any more treatment.
This is only my experience but it looks like the Sarc-X and Immune-Plus really helped the Liverpool Cream to be more effective but in some way blocked the effect of the BCG injections. It would be interesting to learn if anyone else has found the same.

Would these sarcoids be suitable for laser treatment? Might be worth talking to your vet?
 
My gelding has been treated with liverpool cream on his face. The sarcoids went....but returned.....we were going to try another course of the cream, but it was in the winter and he rubbed the cream straight off in his stable.

He had them lasered instead, which was a messy business as his face became infected and the hair fell out, but once he was given stronger antibiotics, it has now all cleared up.

I have my fingers crossed firmly that they won't come back because the insurance is now finished after a year :-/

With regards to the cream on his face, he was sore, and I couldn't ride for a few weeks, but it hasn't made him bridle shy and he never had to be sedated....in fact he was treated out in the field so I didn't have to put a headcollar on....which worked well, as there was no where he could rub the cream off in the field (electric fencing and hedges).

I gave him sarcex for the recommended 6 months, but they grew back whilst he was on it, so I'm not convinced that it worked....
 
Watching this thread with interest as one of my lads has a sarcoid near the corner of his eye and we are waiting for Liverpool to get back to us with a protocol but for BCG injections rather than the cream.
 
Knew of two. One absolutely fine, the other head shy to start with and nervy type ended up PTS due to inability to do anything after. Struggled with cream under sedation but very extreme case.
