Sarcoids - to buy or not to buy?

As normal, Booboos gives excellent advice. I have a horse who pulled a DD Tendon and had to be retired. Lukily I was in a position to give it a good home so haven't had to make any awful decisions, but being a horse owner inevitably brings dilemmas, which is part and parcel of the emotional ups and downs that come from owning such a large animal.

With regard to this particular horse, I think you are right to be cautious about proceeding. It may be that the owners would either let you have him on permanent loan, or take him back to retirement if he did develop sarcoids on the girth within a fixed period of time???? Its worth an ask!

I had the same problem with a pony was going to buy in the local area. Was a perfect wee thing and then when got the vetting done it turned out she had a sarcoid on her shoulder. The vet said that it might be the only one she ever has but it did run the risk of spreading to girth area and then onto her back making her unridable. I decided against this choice as for one the owner was only prepared to knock off a hundred quid or so which was very cheeky I thought and another I wanted a horse I knew had nothing wrong with it. It might have only stayed with that one sarcaoid but I didn't want to run the risk. I was really gutted and cried for a couple of days as got attached to her and even went out and bought her new things ready for her arrival. I made the right choice though and now have a horse I love more than anything. She is a handful and a half but I wouldn't change her for the world. Say no to this one...might take a while to find another one that is perfect for you but there is a horse out there for everyone.
