I have just been offered a lovely 6yo ex race horse straight off the track. He is lovely apart from he has sarcoids. He has one just in front of his girth and about 4 around his sheath and between his legs. I know there is treatment out there but I am unsure whether to risk buying a horse already with sarcoids as i have heard so many horror stories.

Whats the general opinion on sarcoids and would people buy a horse with some?
 
I wouldn't be completely put off by them. Have a vet check them out as depending on the type some are easier than others to remove and some can be left well alone without getting worse. As my vet says they bother me more than they bother my horse.
 
we have a youngster who has them but luckily they are not near his girth or anywhere his tack might be areas so i would be worried that they might rub and become infected... we treated our easily with cream that the vet gave which just made them fall off!
 
having just bought a horse who has a sarcoid that was missed on the vetting it's a bit of a sore subject, but i dont think i'd have bought him if i'd known - he's got enough other issues, without having to deal with a blinking sarcoid. certainly wouldn't buy one with them anywhere near the girth area.
 
They are normally benign, and therefore unless they are in an area like where the girth should sit and aren't causing the horse any discomfort, there isn't much wrong with them. People tend not to like them as more of a cosmetic reason. if you are planning on wanting to sell this horse on in the future, this is sometimes a sticking point. Removal of sarcoids can be done, but they tend to recur, if not in the same place, then somewhere else, due to the horse being susceptible, so if you want this horse you need to get your mind around the sarcoid issue first. But it doesn't mean the horseisn't absolutely lovely and talented etc.
 
I'd be cautious. At the riding school where my boy was in livery until a year ago they had a nice mare who developed a sarcoid on her leg. It got monstrous - size of a tennis ball, weeping and raw and bloody and oozing and flies thinking it was Christmas. Regardless of whether it hurt or the obvious route for infection, they couldn't put customers on her in the end as it looked so totally ghastly. Also, and I hope the vets out there put me straight on this, a sarcoid may be normally benign but I understand that they can occasionally pop up inside the horse?
