Sarcoids??

Hi all,

Quick question as not had a great deal of exeperience with them but what is the general thoughts on buying a horse with sarcoids - project horse, on its neck, 4 of, approx 20p piece size.

Thanks in advance,

Complete lottery! I know people run and hide from sarcoids but we had a fantastic horse bought at a bargin price because of one (albeit big) sarcoid on his belly. We had it removed and he never had another one in the 15 years we had him, and we got one of the best driving horses that ever lived! lol

It really is a lottery! - we had a pony who developed 3 shortly after purchasing him - 2 occult and one very aggressive one on his lateral canthus of his eye. Due to its dangerous position is was treated by Cambridge Uni Vet School with BCG injections and has completely disappeared (2 years now) interestingly the others disappeared as well - this was not supposed to happen but did - he is sarcoid free now. However, I know of horses that have had to be pts because of chronic ulcerating/infected sarcoids. I am told they grow fastest between 4yrs and 8yrs and are believed to be genetic -people are discouraged from breeding from horses with a sarcoid problem. Do you know how long the horse has had the sarcoids? check the horse very thoroughly chances are there are more (occult show as just alopecia and rough skin texture clearly defined). I would tread carefully!

my mare currently has one on her neck right in the middle of her throat i guess, and its just been treated by some (very expensive) cream which has made it all drop off, It was a flat-top sarcloid and about the size of a tennis ball! i bought her with it and the owner told me it was a scar for a old sarcloid.

I dont know if she lied or if she thought it was the scar not knowing it had come back, but it looks very gruesum (sp) atm! but it deffinatly getting better.

It is right where her martingale straps where and always was a proplem! She is off work atm for a good 6 months and got her leg in a huage bandage! so while im not riding and she is on boxrest away from the flies, I decided to use this cream, It is called sarc-off - BRILLIANT STUFF

i had a mare, blemish free. 1 yr later a sarcoid arrived and then followed by more around her body. Tried all sorts inc the Liverpool cream. Sadly mine was worse case and the poor mare had side effects from the Liverpool cream. In the end the vet advised to have her put down. Which broke my heart, now I have been through it I would never buy a horse knowing it had sarcoids. Sorry but its always a risk!

my mare has one on her shoulder and has always had it, a warty flat sarcoid with dry raised lumps. It has never affected her and Ive never had a mind to have it removed as I hear that encourages virulant regrowth. However jsut started with camrosa and it has made a real difference.
I wouldnt swap my horse, sarcoid or no sarcoid

My young horse was found to have sarcoids a few weeks after I bought him (suspect he may have had them before I got him but they were covered in fur as it was December!). Vet came and sent a sample off for confirmation, and we decided to treat him with Liverpool cream. It hadn't arrived several weeks later, which was lucky as by that point they had virtually gone on their own so we cancelled the order, and now there is no trace! So as others have said, there's no way of telling!
