My horse rather suddenly developed a sarcoid just behind his girth a year or so ago. It has been fine and caused no bother at all until recently. It suddenly bled and has become quite angry looking. I have been cleaning it and applying sudocream or camrosa. Someone said yesterday I shouldn't be applying camrosa to it. I have spoken to the vets and they asked for a photo, which I emailed to them but as yet haven't heard anything (3 weeks on) so I do need to ring. What sort of treatment is available and what is the best option?
 
Call the vets and chase them up. They will advise you on the best course of treatment depending on what type of sarcoid it is. I think they ask for a photo as they send it off somewhere who advises them of the best course of treatment.
 
Thanks - that's what they said they would do. I was just wondering whether it was worth getting them to come out and then freeze/ cut it off. Just don't want to have to give him time off at this time of the year in the middle of our season.
 
I have the same problem with a horse I brought late last year, his sarcoid has become angry looking, the vet said they can treat it with liverpool cream but I am waiting till later in the year when the flies have gone and the season has finished, then we will start the treatment.
I am keeping it covered in vasaline and fly spray and keep a fly rug on him as much as possible, the vet said that is the best thing to do.
 
Please please please don't use camrosa, it can make things ten times worse

. As gummybear says, get your vets to have a look, and they will send a photo to Derek Knottenbelt at Liverpool uni, and he will decide whether or not the sarcoid is suitable for treatment with his 'Liverpool cream', and if not what other options are advised.
 
It took just over 3 weeks for me to hear anything from my vet after I'd emailed her photos of my horses sarcoids. Derek Knottenbelt needs to look at the pics as Murphy88 has said before deciding on the strength of the cream to be used if that's the best course of treatment. Think it was another couple of weeks before the cream arrived with my vet. I was advised not to use any creams myself on the sarcoids prior to the application of the Liverpool Cream. My horse finished her 5th application a couple of weeks ago and most of her sarcoids have "erupted" but one is still a swollen hard lump. Obviously they all react differently to treatment so I'm keeping everything Xd for my girl at the mo.
 
As Murphy88 says, please don't use Camrosa on sarcoids. If you read the leaflet that COMES with the very expensive Camrosa you buy, you will see that it says NOT to put it on sarcoids! Liverpool Cream was created by Prof K and is just about the only reasonably effective treatment for true sarcoids. Many, many "sarcoids" are NOt sarcoids so respond to other treatments and then people think whoopee, my ned's sarcoids - which weren't sarcoids - were cleared up using XYZ cream.

A couple of other things to note: unless you're desperate, don't be tempted to have true sarcoids cut or frozen. Interventions like that can cause a sarcoid to become far more aggressive and spread. Don't apply tea tree or aloe vera creams/shampoos/gels, or indeed any product that says on the bottle "aids skin renewal". If it is a true sarcoid, such substances can also cause a sarcoid to become more aggressive. Thuja cream at 30C potency is anecdotal effective in some cases. I've used it on Sunny and it worked a treat, but then his sarcoid may not have been a true sarcoid. I'd recommend EVERYONE downloads a copy of the Prof's information sheet on sarcoids. It's got all the information you need, even if some of it is scary.
 
My horse had 2 sarcoids one by its girth and one on back leg, treated with liverpool university cream and the one by the saddle reacted first, became a huge massive swelling, got aggressive, fell off in 2 weeks after the 5th application. The other one took about 5 weeks to come off, but has repaired well. The professor is also very good at replying to emails when askign for advice. Good luck to all.
 
Thank you everybody for replying - I will leave it well alone until I have heard something. Just spoken to vets and there is a bit of a backlog at the min.
 
agree with everyone else- i learnt the hard way that nothing else should be put on a sarcoid but Liverpool cream!

we tried a few lotions and potions over winter and they just made it bigger and angrier.
after 2 courses of Liverpool cream my boy's sarcoid dropped off (this week!) and i thank my lucky stars that i didn't cause anything worse by messing with it last winter.

if he gets another one i will be straight onto the vet to get the proper cream ASAP.
 
There is often a delay at Liverpool 3-4 weeks seems quite normal - last set of photos took 7 weeks as they lost the email somehow. This has happened to me a couple of times. Vet had to sent off photos again so it's worth keeping on at Vet & make sure they get Liverpool to confirm they have got them as soon as they have sent them. Make them give you an expected timescale - it means they have to phone Liverpool & check!
