Hi,

Recently i have noticed a sarcoid about the size of a 10p under my 6yr old mares belly towards the back. Its hard and you cant move it at all. I have only noticed this one however there is a wart like lump which looks like it could just be pulled off on her hind leg which i am hoping wont grow any bigger. The vet did briefly look at the main one whilst on another call out and said if she was hers she would use lamp rings around it. Has anyone used this method or reccommend any others or should I just leave it? Preferably I need a treatment that will allow her to carry on competing (eventing) as my friend had a horse who was very ill during the process of removing it (think she used a cream) and one with a low chance of them returning.

Thankyou

I saw a case similar to this while on placement with a vet a few weeks ago. It is obviously painful when the ring first goes on, but according to the vet this normally dulls within 1-2 hours. I would think the vet will need to sedate the mare a) for his own safety and b)because of the pain factor, so as far as competing goes, she will be out of action for as long as the sedative is in the system. In the case of the horse I saw, the vet left it a couple of weeks until a time when the horse had 7-10 days between competitions.

There are lots of other methods for getting rid of sarcoids, each with +ve's and -ve's. Most vets send pictures of the sarcoid away to Derek Knottenbelt, the sarcoid expert at liverpool, if they are unsure of treatment, but if it is suitable for ringing then that might be the best option in terms of carrying on competing.

Good luck!

lamb rings work on the type of sarcoids that will shell out. the other flatter verrucosed sarcoids respond to cream as not enough to "band". best talk to vet and discuss fully

x terra works in a matter of days, i think its a natural product. My horse had one and put this on for 4 days it broke up and fell off. (i hid the cream up the jard, must of been a good place- its vanished now) its been bout 2 yrs and there is still a slight mark but it hasnt grown back!
